HANCEVILLE – After a breathtaking 74-73 victory over Holly Pond Monday night, the Cold Springs Eagles began play in the 32nd Hanceville Thanksgiving Tournament Tuesday with plenty of firepower to put away the Cleveland Panthers 64-44 at Lane Horton Gymnasium.
Besides the normal scoring from guard Triston Chambers and forward Joshn Freeman, the Eagles got a three-pointer from left hander Adam Carney right as the first half ended that sent Cold Springs to the locker room with a double digit advantage.
His lone basket of the game made the score 31-18 and Cold Springs began to gain momentum after Cleveland had fought them hard for much of the first 16 minutes.
The Eagles broke it open with a 19-10 surge thanks to a dozen points from Chambers and seven by Freeman. The duo broke down Cleveland's defense and extended the advantage to 50-28.
Chambers wound up with 27 points, a night after he torched Holly Pond for 37. The junior had nine field goals, four treys and was five of seven from the line.
Freeman netted 17, scoring 13 in the second half. The senior tossed in seven shots and went three of four from the stripe.
Cayde Elliott scored 12 for the 5-0 Eagles, Carney and Derrick Isbell hit a trey and Austin Moore scored two.
Cleveland was led by Chris Corder with 13, Khalil Johnson had nine. The Panthers fell to 2-2 on the year.
Corner 58, Good Hope 26:
Corner ran the Raiders off the Lane Horton Gym floor by a 21-3 run in the second quarter, turning a slim 14-9 lead into a 35-12 runaway at halftime.
Good Hope never recovered and fell to 0-6 on the season with Corner moving into the semifinal round at 3-1.
Tyler Vanderburg led the Raiders with seven while Reese Harbison scored six.
For Corner, Chase Best scored 12 and Dillon McCaleb added 10.
Corner will get Cold Springs in the semifinal round Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Good Hope has a 5:15 p.m. game in the consolation bracket with Cleveland.
Hanceville gets to play a doubleheader. The Bulldogs meet Mortimer Jordan in the consolation bracket at 4 p.m. and take on Dora in the semifinals around 7:45 p.m.
The Bulldogs drew a first round bye with the tournament only fielding seven teams. Dora defeated Mortimer Jordan in the final game Tuesday evening 62-36.
