PREP VOLLEYBALL: Cullman Christian earns road win over Hanceville

HANCEVILLE, Ala. — Hanceville hosted a tri-match with Cullman Christian and Dora Thursday night and the Lady Lions returned home with a 2-1 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Hanceville and Cullman Christian each played a second match against Dora and fell 2-1 and 2-0, respectively.

Cullman Christian 2 – Hanceville 1 (First Game)

Hanceville got off to a fast start in the first set as Charity Barnes started things off with an ace and later on, a kill by Kate Sterling and three straight aces from Makenzie Twilley gave the Lady Bulldogs a 6-2 lead. Katie Twilley collected an ace of her own later on in the set, and Aaliyah Twitty added a kill and an ace as well to make it a 12-6 lead for Hanceville. Cullman Christian trimmed the deficit to just five at 15-10, but a point by Aaliyah Twitty made it 17-11 and later on, Karys Henderson collected an ace to push the Lady Bulldog lead to 19-12. The Lady Lions cut it to 21-15, but a kill by Makenzie Twilley and the game-winning point by Sterling gave the Lady Bulldogs a 25-17 win in the first set.

Cullman Christian jumped on Hanceville early in the second set, going up 8-2. Henderson collected an ace and that was followed by a point by Makenzie Twilley to cut it to 8-5. An ace by Alex Twitty made it 9-6, but as quick as a flash, the Lady Lions went on a 9-2 run to push their lead to 18-8. Barnes cut it to 18-11 on an ace, but the Lady Bulldogs couldn’t get any closer after that as the Lady Lions took the second set 25-12.

Just like the second set, Cullman Christian jumped out to a quick lead, going up 6-2. Hanceville mounted a comeback to get back in the game, and they would do just that as they got points from Aaliyah and Alex Twitty to grab an 8-7 lead. The Lady Lions went on a run of their own to get the lead right back at 12-8, but back-to-back kills by Alex Twitty and an ace from Katie Twilley cut it to 12-11. Cullman Christian, though, finished the game strong as they scored the final three points of the third and deciding set to win it 15-12.

Dora 2 – Hanceville 1 (Second Match)

It was a back-and-forth contest early on in the first set between Dora and Hanceville. It was tied at three before consecutive kills by Aaliyah Twitty gave Hanceville a 5-3 lead. Dora got the lead right back at 7-6 later on in the first set, but six straight points by Hanceville included an ace from Alex Twitty as that gave Hanceville a 12-7 lead. They later made it 16-9 on an ace from Barnes and a kill by Twilley. Dora would later cut it to 20-16, but Hanceville got the final five points of the set as Olivia Stallings got the game-winning point of the set on an ace and Hanceville took the first set 25-16.

The second set was your classic back-and-forth battle as both teams gave it their all for the whole set. Dora held a slim 7-6 lead, but a point and an ace from Aaliyah Twitty helped give Hanceville a 9-7 lead. An ace from Alex Twitty and a point by Sterling pushed Hanceville’s lead to 13-9, but Dora battled back to tie things up at 15. Stallings’ ace gave Hanceville a 19-17 lead. Dora got the lead right back at 20-19, but Hanceville would later tie things up once again at 21. Dora held a slim 24-21 lead, but a Katie Twilley kill cut it to 24-22. Dora, though, got the final point of the set as they tied things up at one apiece with a 25-22 win in the second set.

The third set saw Dora jump out to a quick 8-1 lead, but Hanceville scored four of the next five points, including a point by Aaliyah Twitty, to cut it to 9-5. They didn’t get any closer after that as Dora went on a 6-1 run to end the set as they ended up taking the set 15-6.

Hanceville will be hitting the road to play in a tournament at Albertville Saturday.
