Obituary: Clara Mae Tidwell Porter

Clara Mae Tidwell Porter, 93, of Addison, passed away on July 25, 2023, at Hanceville Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Hanceville. Mrs. Porter was born on Jan. 20, 1930, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a graduate of Hewitt-Trussville High School. She attended Alabama Christian in Montgomery and later received a Bachelor in Education from The University of Alabama. Clara was a long-time member of Sardis Baptist Church #2. She was a beloved teacher at Addison Elementary School for many, many years. Mrs. Porter was known to her grandchildren as “Mamaw” and she loved spending time with them.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 28, 2023, at Sardis Baptist Church #2 in Addison, where services will be held at 11 a.m. She will lie in state from 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. Brother William McClellan will open the service in prayer and Brother Mackey Watts and Brother Mike Tidwell will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Clara is survived by her children, Shirley Porter Wells and Johnny (Sherry) Porter; granddaughters, Tiffany (Joey) Gibbs, Brooke Porter and Emily (Jake) Gilliland; great-grandchildren, Taylor Porter, Blateney Pratt, Ellie Pratt, Aubree Gilliland, Graham Gilliland, and Clara James Gilliland and one great-great-grandchild, Merritt Porter.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jahugh Porter; her parents, James F. Tidwell and Mae Belle Tidwell; and brothers, Oliver Tidwell and Earnest Tidwell.
