Hanceville Public Library celebrates 88th birthday of beloved librarian Shirley Burden

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Surrounded by cherished books, lively children, and grateful coworkers, Shirley Burden celebrated her 88th birthday on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at Hanceville Public Library. The celebration included heartfelt handmade cards from the children who attend the library’s weekly storytimes, along with a joyful rendition of “Happy Birthday” by all participants. As a humble figurehead of the library for the past 17 years, she wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Burden, a respected member of the Hanceville community, has devoted her efforts to organizing summer reading programs for children. When asked about her affinity for reading, she simply stated, “It’s important for children.”

Theresa Rivera, Burden’s coworker for two years, shared that she was actually hired by Burden and wanted to express love and gratitude for all that Burden has done for the library and the city of Hanceville as a whole.

“We wanted to show our appreciation for her unwavering dedication to the community. Everyone adores her. Some people come in just to sit and chat with her!” Rivera exclaimed with a smile.

“Don’t make too much of it!” Burden laughed, brushing off the accolades while savoring the unexpected joy of an exceptionally special birthday.

Happy birthday, Shirley!
