ELDRIDGE – Friday night’s contest between the Meek Tigers and the Hubbertville Lions was a contest full of big plays, but unfortunately for Meek, they all belonged to the Lions.

Hubbertville won the toss and elected to receive. The choice immediately paid off as senior running back Dax Benton hit a huge hole and flew down the field for a 66-yard TD. Adding the 2-point conversion was Trey Snow, and the Lions quickly found themselves up 8-0 a mere 11 seconds into the contest.

Both Meek and Hubbertville traded punts on the next two possessions. On their second series of the game, Meek was able to cross into Lions’ territory, but the drive would come to an end when Ethan Nichols stepped in front of a Dillion Baker pass for the pick. Hubbertville quickly capitalized when Benton rushed for his second TD of the first quarter, this time for 56 yards, and put the Lions up 15-0 late in the first quarter following the PAT.

The second quarter started with a Meek punt, but Hubbertville was unable to pick up a first down and they were forced to punt ball back to the Tigers. Meek would put together a nice drive thanks to the triple threat attack of Destin Morris, Gabe Jones and John Mark Abercrombie, but the drive bogged down at the Lions’ 35 where Meek would turn the ball over on downs.

The next play from scrimmage was the third and final touchdown on the night for Benton, but he made it count. Taking the handoff from quarterback Chandler Young, Benton busted up the middle and motored up the field for a 62-yard TD run, making the score 22-0 in favor of the Lions.

Hubbertville added another score at the end of the half, following a turnover on downs from Meek. Young threw a 37-yard strike to Snow on fourth down to push the score to 28-0 and here the score would stay for the remainder of the contest as Hubbertville took down the Meek Tigers.

Benton finished the game with nine carries for 222 yards and three touchdowns.

John Mark Abercrombie of Meek led the Tigers with 11 carries for 50 yards.

Meek will host Lynn next week.
