Obituary: James Gary Akin

Funeral services for James Gary Akin, 76, of Hanceville, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Bethlehem East Cemetery in Hanceville. Visitation for the public will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday prior to the service at Hanceville Funeral Home.

Mr. Akin was born to the late James Alfred Akin and Verda Irene Harrell-Akin on June 22, 1946 in Hanceville. Mr. Akin was a man of many trades. In his earlier years, Mr. Akin started his own egg business and ran it as ‘Akin Egg Company’. Along the way Garywould meet and eventually marry the love of his life, Linda Rena Lopez. After deciding to put his business behind; he went on to work for The United States Postal Service as a Postal Carrier. With a lot of dedication and hard work his career would continue on for about thirty-three and a half years before retiring. Even after retirement, Mr. Akin would continue on with many of the things he enjoyed doing. He enjoyed spending time in his garden, tinkering with antique cars and most importantly loving on his family.

Those left to cherish his legacy are his children, Lorrie (Donny) Stricklin and Jamie (Jane) Akin; grandchildren, Brennen Stricklin, Hannah Stricklin, Will Akin and Eli Akin; great grandchildren, Ivy Stricklin and Omari Stricklin; sister-in-law, Debbie (Buster) Crumpton; brothers-in-law, Mike (The Late Joan) Lopez, and Herman Charles (Lenna) Lopez Jr.; and a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

Mr. Akin was preceded in death by his parents; his precious wife, Linda Akin; sister, Peggy Peed; and brother, William E. “Bill” Akin. 

In lieu of flowers, the family of Mr. Akin asks that you consider a donation to the Linda Akin Memorial Scholarship. It is set up at Merchant’s Bank of Alabama.
