WEST POINT, Ala. — The Fairview Lady Aggies made the trip over to West Point for some Monday night softball action and it was even after one inning, but it was all West Point the rest of the way and the Lady Warriors ended up rolling past Fairview 14-4.
Fairview got things going in their opening at-bats. Emily Benson reached on an error to lead off the game, then Jaycee Aleman punched an RBI triple to right field to give the Lady Aggies the early 1-0 lead. Kylie Kovar added an RBI groundout to make it 2-0, then with two outs, Allison Davis launched a solo home run over the center field wall to give Fairview a 3-0 lead. West Point countered in their half as Macayla Wilkins reached on a bunt single, then Macie Brown reached on a Lady Aggie error. Another Fairview error allowed Wilkins and Brown to score to cut it to 3-2. Brinlee Phillips added an RBI groundout to tie the game up at three.
West Point broke the tie in their next at-bats. Bailey Brock reached base on a Fairview error and ended up going to third on the play. Wilkins hit a sacrifice fly to give the Lady Warriors a 4-3 lead, then after a Brown double, she moved to third on a passed ball. Bethany Minck’s RBI single brought her home, then Phillips followed that up with an RBI triple to right field to give West Point a 6-3 lead.
The Lady Aggies cut it to 6-4 in the top of the third on an RBI groundout by Davis, but West Point got that run back in their half as Katie Beth Yovino hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-4 game. Minck scored on a Fairview error in their next at-bats as the Lady Warriors pushed their lead to 8-4. West Point quickly ended things in the fifth inning as Liberty Shadix hit a sacrifice fly, Wilkins added an RBI single, Brown lined an RBI double to center field, and Phillips hit an RBI groundout to stretch their lead to 12-4. Minck and Lexi Kimbril each scored on back-to-back errors and West Point would go on to defeat Fairview 14-4.
Minck (two hits) and Phillips (one hit) each finished with three RBIs in the game for West Point. Brown added three hits and an RBI. Wilkins collected a pair of hits and two RBIs in the contest. Yovino and Shadix each chipped in with an RBI of their own. Brock added two hits and Kara Jones collected a hit as well. For Fairview, Davis finished with a hit and two RBIs. Aleman and Kovar each added a hit and an RBI, while Jordan Simmons chipped in with a hit of her own.
West Point will travel to take on Priceville Tuesday and Fairview will host Hanceville.
Cullman 21 – Madison Academy 13 (Baseball)
Cullman didn’t waste any time getting in the run column first as they loaded the bases with no outs. One out later, Tucker Cagle hit a two-run single to right field to give them an early 2-0 lead, then Riley Jackson stole home to make it 3-0. The Bearcats added to their lead in the top of the second. Bennett Johnson scored on a Mustang error to give Cullman a 4-0 lead, then after loading the bases, Elijah Hayes cleared them on a 2-2 count, as his double made it a 7-0 game.
Madison Academy got in the run column in their half as an RBI groundout, a solo home run, and a passed ball cut it to 7-3. Cullman answered right back in the top of the third as they once again loaded the bases with two outs for Cagle, who promptly launched a grand slam over the right field fence to push the Bearcat lead to 11-3. Hunter Howell later added a two-run double as it was now a 13-3 game. The Mustangs quickly countered with a huge inning of their own as they put up seven runs to cut it to 13-10. Cagle continued his red-hot day at the plate as he added an RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it 14-10, then Easton Peed drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 15-10.
A sacrifice fly by the Mustangs trimmed it to 15-11 in the bottom of the fifth, but Cullman would put up their final runs of the game in the top of the sixth. The Bearcats loaded the bases with one out for Peed, who proceeded to line a two-run double to left field to push their lead to 17-11. Tyler Brock drew a bases-loaded walk to force home a run, then Paxton Ponder hit a bases-clearing triple to put the Bearcats over the 20-run mark as that made it a 21-11 game. An RBI single and an RBI fielder’s choice by Madison Academy cut it to 21-13, but the Bearcats didn’t allow them to get any closer after that as they went on to knock off Madison Academy on the road 21-13.
Cagle had a huge day at the plate, finishing with three hits and seven RBIs for Cullman. Ponder, Hayes and Peed each added a hit and three RBIs. Howell collected a pair of hits and two RBIs in the contest. Brock posted a hit and an RBI as well. Jackson added three hits, while Cole Floyd, Brooks Heatherly, and Cody Jones each chipped in with a hit of their own.
Cullman will now prepare to travel to Mortimer Jordan for the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs Thursday.
