Library hosts gardening event, announces seed swap
CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Public Library recently hosted an event with the Cullman County Extension Office to give people tips on how to plan and plant a summer garden.
Cullman County Extension Coordinator Kira Sims covered site prep, seeds and transplants, maintenance and other helpful tips. At the end of the presentation, attendees were given seeds and instructions for how to plant various vegetables.
The library has also started a seed swap, with Chambers Farm and Garden Supply donating a selection of seeds. Library Director Sharon Townson said she hopes the seed swap will be casual.
Cullman County Library Circulation Manager Laura Benton said, “Eventually, it would be nice if patrons could bring seed back in to share. While we are focusing on vegetables right now, it would be nice to add a variety of flower seeds.”
As the planting cycles go by, people can dry out their seeds and bring them to the library to donate to the swap. The library will also take prepackaged or store-bought seeds.
Anyone from the community can participate, not just library patrons, and it’s free. The library will try to keep seed envelopes on-hand for people to fill up and/or take home.
The seed swap will be an ongoing project at the library.
