CULLMAN, Ala. – Distinguished Young Women of Cullman County will hold an informational meeting at First Baptist Church of Cullman on Saturday, March 18, at 11 a.m.
Local Chairman Felicia Carden said the meeting is open to all high school juniors who reside in Cullman County
“Distinguished Young Women is a national scholarship program that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership and talent in young women,” Carden said. “Cash scholarships are awarded to participants in the Cullman County competition for winning different categories like scholastics, talent and interview. The Cullman program winner advances to the state program in Montgomery where more than $32,000 is given in cash scholarships, plus college-granted scholarships to the winner.”
Carden said the program is free to enter and the girls participate in life skill workshops to prepare them for the world after high school.
“We teach the girls public speaking and interview skills to help build their self-confidence because they are going to need that going into their senior year for interviews, scholarships and jobs,” Carden said. “We are just trying to teach them to ‘be their best self’ in all avenues. The main thing is that it’s a scholarship program and national program that inspires young women to develop their full potential.”

Founded in 1958, Distinguished Young Women is the largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls. It has provided life-changing experiences for more than 775,000 young women across the country and more than $112 million in cash scholarships at the local, state and national levels. In addition to cash scholarships, Distinguished Young Women participants are eligible for college-granted scholarships from over 100 colleges and universities. More than $1 billion in college scholarship opportunities were provided last year, some of which included full tuition, room, and board to first-class institutions.
All participants also take part in Distinguished Young Women’s Life Skills Workshops to gain skills that will serve them well in our program and in life beyond high school. Many participants leave the program with scholarships to help them with their college educations, but all of them walk away with friendships, life skills and increased self-confidence.
