CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Master Gardeners and Alabama Cooperative Extension System will host an inaugural Native Azalea and Wildflowers Sale on Saturday, March 25, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Just in time for spring planting, the sale will be held at the Sportsman Lake Wildflower Garden.

Native azaleas are known for their lovely fragrance and are often harder to find in nurseries than the usual evergreen, non-native varieties. In their native habitat, the native azaleas are often indistinguishable until the spring and summer when they bloom brilliantly, standing out from the habitat surrounding them.

Sometimes known as deciduous azaleas or erroneously called wild honeysuckle, native azaleas flourish in the southeastern United States where at least 17 species are found. Unlike the mounding evergreen shrub azalea varieties, natives more closely resemble a small tree form.

Cullman is an ideal area for native azaleas. The mild climate and abundance of natural resources make it possible to create a stunning outdoor environment that can be enjoyed year-round.

Wildflowers are another great way to add color and interest to your landscape. Ferns, butterfly milkweed, cosmos and bee balm are just a few of the wildflowers that will be available at the plant sale. These flowers are incredibly easy to maintain and require very little care or attention. They will bloom seasonally throughout the year with vibrant colors that draw hummingbirds and butterflies right into your yard. Wildflowers are also low maintenance and require no fertilization or special treatments- they simply need sun and regular watering.

Azaleas and wildflowers are both easy to care for and can provide years of beauty and enjoyment. They also require very little maintenance, making them perfect for busy homeowners who don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to their outdoor space. By incorporating these native plants into your landscape design, you’ll be able to create a unique look that will last for years while also adding value to your property.
