CULLMAN – Seventeen-year-old Dae Spradlin will be heading to New York City this fall to participate in Fashion Week.
Spradlin is originally from Graysville (a suburb of Birmingham), and although she and her family moved to Cullman just less than five years ago, the Cullman community has had a big impact on her.
“The people of Cullman have been very welcoming to me,” she said. “There is a strong sense of community and family. I want to represent (the people of Cullman) well. I think the people of Cullman are very rooted in their beliefs, and that has helped me to stay grounded in my beliefs.” She added that the things she has learned about life while in Cullman will help her while moving forward in her career, staying grounded in her beliefs and helping her make wise decisions.
Spradlin says she has always been interested in modeling, but (understandably) did not really know how to get into the industry.
“(Getting involved with modeling) was completely unexpected,” she said. “My mom found a model call on Facebook for Alabama Fashion Alliance in Huntsville and asked if I wanted to attend. I was very nervous! I went to the casting and was accepted and walked in my first runway show on March 1, 2016 for Alabama Fashion Week.”
Although she did not expect anything past that first fashion week, during the week she was able to walk for D’an Harrold, owner of Model Haven. Spradlin has been working with the company ever since, traveling, and participating in multiple shows and photo shoots, both locally and in Atlanta, as well as for other designers.
“I will be walking in three shows at New York Fashion Week; Small Boutique Fashion Week, Walk Fashion Show and a third show. I will be going specifically to walk for D'an Harrold of Portia Jacobs Designs and Model Haven Boutique,” Spradlin said. “I am very thankful to her for inviting me to attend. In addition, I auditioned and have been chosen to cast for over 50 designers at Small Boutique Fashion Week, which has been voted No. 1 indie showcase during NYC Fashion Week by the Indie Fashion Association and by CBS.”
Spradlin, at age 17, has already graduated high school and been dual-enrolled at Wallace State Community College. She is currently taking a gap year to assess where she may attend college next, if she chooses to do so.
When Spradlin heads to NYC in the fall, it will be her first visit to the city.
“I imagine it will be very exciting with a lot of organized chaos,” she said. “I have never been to New York, so I am looking forward to just being there.”
