CULLMAN COUNTY, Ala. – Two stops at Cullman County senior centers on Tuesday gave a bird’s eye view of why our community is special – we care for each other. Whether it be at the Colony Senior Center, where First Federal Mortgage Branch Manager Misti Easter and her team called bingo games and provided prizes for the local elders, or at the Good Hope Senior Center, where Cullman County Commissioner Garry Marchman and his wife brought and served lunch to the seniors, it was clear that serving and honoring our senior citizens is important to everyone.

An always competitive game of bingo was underway at Colony where everyone was a winner, especially Barbara Ward, who celebrated her 86th birthday on Saturday, Jan. 21.

When asked why she chose to spend time with the seniors, Easter replied, “I initially contacted (Colony Senior Center Manager) Rhonda Brewer because I wanted to volunteer and spend time here. She suggested that we come help with bingo and we couldn’t wait to come.”

Brewer said she feels that seniors are often overlooked as valuable assets to society and forgotten by the business world.

“Including businesses helps the seniors to know what services and businesses are out there,” Brewer explained. “It seems that, when people reach a certain age, businesses stop catering to them. They think that, because you’re 60, you’re old. That’s just not true. Our seniors are active. They’re still on the move, buying and participating in the community.”

At the Good Hope Senior Center, Marchman brought along family and lunch for the participants as he has been doing at centers across the county. The commissioner received many hugs, handshakes and valued advice as he broke bread with his elders.

“It’s an honor for me to spend time with the seniors of Cullman County,” said Marchman. “We’re here to serve them as much as anybody else. They have worked hard raising us, helping our county, and it’s our turn to help them out however we can. We wouldn’t be where we are without them.”
