PREP BASKETBALL: Cold Springs Eagles, Lady Eagles earn wins over Vinemont

BREMEN, Ala. – The Cold Springs Eagles and Lady Eagles were back home at Jesse George Gymnasium to host Vinemont Thursday night and both home teams collected wins over the visiting Eagles. The Lady Eagles topped Vinemont 68-50 in the girls’ game and in the boys’ game, Cold Springs defeated Vinemont 53-34.

Cold Springs 68 – Vinemont 50 (Varsity Girls)

It was tough sledding for both teams early on, but Cold Springs got on the scoreboard first on a Dickerson layup. Later on, she added five more points to push the Cold Springs lead to 7-0 with less than four minutes to go in the first quarter. Vinemont got on the scoreboard with 2:21 left on a pair of Carley Stephens free throws and later on, Maggie Burks hit a layup for their first basket of the game as that made it 9-4. Cold Springs got red-hot from three after that as Maci Brown and Dickerson each hit one to make it 15-4. Burks hit one from long-range to cut it to 15-7, but Ella Bruer hit one to end the first quarter as Cold Springs took an 18-7 lead into the second period.

Dickerson put in a floater to make it 20-7 early in the second quarter and later hit a three to push Cold Springs’ lead to 23-9. Burks hit another trey to cut it to 23-12, but Dickerson couldn’t seem to miss from behind the three-point line as she hit three more from there and Brown added one from long-range as well to give Cold Springs a 35-14 lead. They would end up taking a 36-16 lead into the half.

Whitney Quick quickly got Vinemont’s offense going to start the third quarter as she scored the first six points of the period, including an and-one, to cut it to 40-22. But Bruer knocked down a three and Dickerson continued her amazing shooting night as she scored the next eight points. Ciara Calvert added a layup as Cold Springs quickly increased their lead to 53-22. Vinemont looked to quickly cut into Cold Springs’ lead late in the third quarter. Reagan Robinson drilled a long-range shot and Caroline Miller converted on her and-one opportunity to make it a 53-28 game, then baskets by Robinson and Stephens made it a 53-34 game. Each team traded baskets to end the period as Cold Springs took a 55-36 lead into the final quarter.

Miller and Stephens helped Vinemont cut into the Cold Springs’ lead even more as baskets by them made it a 56-40 game. Robinson scored her team’s next six points to swivel the deficit to 12 at 58-46 with less than four minutes to go in the contest. A pair of Brown free throws stopped the bleeding as that made it 60-46, but a Vayda Yarbrough trey from the right corner made it a 60-49 game. But Calvert added a basket on the other end to push Cold Springs’ lead to 62-49 and free throws by Bruer and Brown helped them pull away from Vinemont in the end as Cold Springs ended up taking the game over Vinemont, 68-50.

Dickerson finished with a game-high 33 points and 11 rebounds for Cold Springs (16-1). Brown added 13 points and five rebounds, while Bruer ended up with 11 points, six rebounds, and a pair of steals. For Vinemont (10-7), Robinson led the way with 16 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Stephens added 12 points, while Burks ended up with eight points and six rebounds.

Cold Springs 53 – Vinemont 34 (Varsity Boys)

Ryan Stewart knocked down a three to put Vinemont on the scoreboard first. Cold Springs was held scoreless for the first 3 1/2 minutes of the game before a Nic Fallin made basket put them on the scoreboard. He would later knock down a three to give Cold Springs a 5-3 lead, but a three from the right corner by Jaxon Holcombe gave Vinemont a 6-5 lead with 3:21 left in the first quarter. Almost two minutes later, a three by Isaac Moody pushed Vinemont’s lead to 9-7, but Cold Springs got a three each from John Mark Smith and Fallin as Cold Springs took a 13-9 lead into the second period.

Another Stewart trey cut it to 13-12, but Smith hit his second one of the first half and Cameron Nunn hit a layup to give Cold Springs an 18-12 lead. A pair of Fallin free throws made it 20-12, then he added a basket down low to increase Cold Springs’ lead to 22-13. Ray hit a basket down for Vinemont as that made it a seven-point game late in the first half. Each team traded baskets to end the first half as Cold Springs took a 24-17 lead into the locker room.

Fallin drilled a long-range shot to start the third quarter as Cold Springs pushed their lead to 27-17, but a basket each by Holcombe and Chayce Sandlin cut it to 27-21. After that, it was all Cold Springs as a pair of Smith threes and one by Fallin increased their lead to 37-22. Nunn added a driving layup and Smith hit another trey to make it 42-22, then Ty Peppers hit a basket down low as Cold Springs ended up outscoring Vinemont 20-5 to take a 44-22 lead into the final period.

A pair of baskets by Ray and one by Sandlin made it a 46-29 game with a little over four minutes to go in the game, but they wouldn’t get any closer after that as Cold Springs would end up defeating Vinemont 53-34.

Fallin led the way for Cold Springs (4-14) with 22 points. Smith added 19 points, while Nunn ended up with seven points. For Vinemont (7-9), Ray finished with eight points and Holcombe and Sandlin each added six points.

Cold Springs will take on Cleveland at home Friday night in a pair of area games while Vinemont will travel to take on Hanceville Saturday afternoon.
