PREP BASKETBALL: Good Hope downs Fairview 77-62, Lady Raiders improve to 12-0 with 63-22 win

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – The Good Hope Raiders and Lady Raiders returned home to D.E. Ryan Gymnasium Tuesday night to host the Aggies of Fairview and both Good Hope squads were able to collect wins on their home court. The top-ranked Lady Raiders cruised past the Lady Aggies 63-22 to improve to 12-0 and in the boys’ game, Good Hope topped Fairview 77-62 to remain unbeaten in county play.

Good Hope 63 – Fairview 22 (Varsity Girls)

Ivey Maddox drilled a three to get the scoring started for Good Hope, then Rudi Derrick added a basket down low to make it 5-0. Ava Thomas knocked down a shot to put Fairview on the scoreboard, but baskets by Charly Johnson and Maddox quickly made it 9-2. Heather Tetro and Maddox each hit a three to push the Lady Raider lead to 17-2 going into the second quarter.

Emma Garcia hit a layup to make it a 17-4 game, but Bailey and Heather Tetro each hit a shot, along with Jolee McHan, to increase Good Hope’s lead to 23-6. Jayla Gorham hit a basket and Thomas hit a pair of shots as well to cut it to 25-12. Heather Tetro knocked down a three and Bailey Tetro added a shot down low to make it 30-12. Gorham hit another shot down low to cut it to 31-14, but Maddox hit a shot down low as the Lady Raiders took a 34-12 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter saw Good Hope continue to add on to their lead as Maddox and Bailey Tetro combined to score 16 of their 18 points in the period and Johnson added a basket as well and the Lady Raiders took a 52-14 lead into the final period, which was run under a hot clock. Good Hope remained unbeaten as they easily defeated the Lady Aggies, 63-22.

Bailey Tetro finished with 22 points for Good Hope (12-0). Maddox added 15 points. Heather Tetro ended up with 10 points, while Johnson added seven points. For Fairview (5-9), Gorham finished with 11 points. Thomas added six points. Lexi Golden ended up with three points and Garcia chipped in with two points.

Good Hope 77 – Fairview 62 (Varsity Boys)

Weston Hancock hit a tough shot down low to put Good Hope on the scoreboard first, but baskets down low by Cade Yeager and Cylas Yarbrough gave Fairview a 4-2 lead. Antonio Gambrill banked in a three to give the Aggies a 7-4 lead. Both teams traded baskets for most of the first quarter. A Yarbrough layup saw Fairview hold onto a slim 11-8 lead, but a basket down low by Bell and a trey by Hancock gave the Raiders a 13-11 lead. A driving layup by Kobe Payne saw Fairview take a 15-14 lead into the second period.

Bryson Fletcher knocked down a three from the left wing to push the Aggie lead to 18-14 early in the second quarter, but baskets by Eli Clements and Bell tied the game up at 18. A pair of Landon Smith free throws broke the tie and that gave Fairview a 20-18 lead, but later on, Bell scored five straight points to give the Raiders the lead right back at 24-20. Haynes added a basket and a pair of free throws, and Hancock knocked down a shot as well to push Good Hope’s lead to 30-20 late in the second period. A pair of Payne free throws and another basket by Yarbrough cut it to 30-24, but Haynes banked in a floater to put Good Hope on top, 32-24, at halftime.

Cone quickly drilled a three to make it a 35-24 game, but Payne hit one of his own and added a pair from the line to cut it to 35-29. Bell drilled one from long range to make it 38-29, but a free throw by Payne cut it to 40-32. Hancock hit a floater and Cone hit one of his own to push the Raider lead to 44-32 late in the third period. Gambrill hit another three to make it a 46-35 game. Yarbrough knocked down a free throw, then added a basket to cut it to 48-38. Each team traded a pair of free throws and Good Hope took a 50-40 lead into the final period.

Colten Whatley hit a layup to make it 52-40, then Colton Lindsey and Cone each added a basket down low to push Good Hope’s lead to 56-42. Back-to-back baskets by Gambrill made it a 56-46 game. A pair of Hancock free throws and another Haynes floater made it a 62-48 game, but a Yarbrough three cut it to 62-51 with a little over four minutes to go in the game. Good Hope didn’t allow Fairview to get any closer after that as baskets by Cone and Bell increased Good Hope’s lead to 69-54 and the Raiders would go on to defeat the Aggies, 77-62.

Bell led the way for Good Hope (10-3) with 26 points. Cone added 20 points. Hancock ended up with 15 points and Haynes added nine points. For Fairview (6-7), Yarbrough finished with 21 points. Payne added 15 points and Gambrill ended up with 10 points. 

Good Hope will travel to take on West Point Thursday night. Fairview’s varsity girls will participate in a tournament in Athens on Dec. 28 and the varsity boys will travel to Tennessee to take part in the King of the Smokies tournament from Dec. 27-29.
