BREMEN, Ala. – Cold Springs High School is encouraging its students and staff to participate in a toy drive. Toys and monetary donations will be accepted at the school office until Dec. 16.
The drive is being organized by the school’s 1936 Club and was the idea of club member McKinna Duke.
Club sponsor and school secretary Tammy Gay said, “The 1936 Club is a new club that we have started this year at our school; 1936 is the year that the school started, and we’re just trying to teach our kids how to give back to our community. We want to take care of our community.”
She said the club works to provide for any students or community members in need. “We are taking donations and raising money to help. If we see a child that needs shoes or a jacket or anything, we discreetly give the item to that child.”
After the toy drive, club sponsors will distribute the donations to those in the community who are experiencing either financial struggles or have gone through a recent emergency situation or disaster. Club sponsors will get in touch with elementary and high school teachers to find out which kids may be in need and then contact those parents.
Said Gay, “It’s for kids that are in need, but also those going through hardships. There are times when parents may lose their job or there is a sickness in their family, and they’re just going through a hard time, and buying toys or buying food is something that maybe is not easy for them to do at the moment.”
The drive is predominately for toys for children and teenagers. Gay said she hopes donors do not forget about the teenagers as they are often overlooked during toy drives. The school will also accept gift cards instead of toys for older children.
