CULLMAN, Ala. – With the holiday season fast approaching, members of local law enforcement provided tips on how to keep yourself and your property safe.

Cullman Police Department Public Relations Officer Adam Clark and Assistant Police Chief David Nassetta shared that the basics of safety start with maintaining all items and keeping everything secured.

“Lock your car doors and don’t leave personal items or items of value in your car are two of the most important things,” Clark said. “Have your packages delivered to a secure pick-up location. Don’t announce your holiday travel plans on social media. Entrust a neighbor or friend to look after your residence while you are gone. If possible, leave a vehicle parked in the driveway to appear as if someone is home. Make sure you get your mail daily to help prevent mail theft. Also, make sure you record your serial numbers for all of your guns.”

Nassetta added to not leave guns in unlocked vehicles.

“If you insist on leaving a gun in your vehicle, then make sure it is locked up and well hidden,” Nassetta said.

Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry shared several tips for home and vehicle safety.

“Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer if possible,” Gentry said. “Leave a radio or TV on to give the appearance that someone is home. Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home.”

Some basic points of safety from the CCSO are listed below.

If someone is at the door:

  • Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering packages or gifts.
  • Never open the door if you are uncertain who is there.
  • Be skeptical of door-to-door solicitors. Criminals will take advantage of people’s generosity during the holiday season.

Driving/shopping:

  • Keep doors and windows locked, whether you are inside or out of your vehicle.
  • If you must shop at night, remember where you park and park in a well-lit area.
  • Pay attention to whom you are parking beside; avoid vans, vehicles with camper shells or vehicles with dark tinted windows.
  • Park as close as possible to your destination
  • Never leave your vehicle running while unoccupied (or with children inside.)
  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight.
  • Have your keys readily available as you approach your car.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings, especially as you are approaching your vehicle.
  • Do not approach your vehicle if there are suspicious people loitering around the area.
  • Ask security or store personnel to escort you to the vehicle if you are apprehensive.

If you ever have any issues arise, don’t hesitate but to contact local law enforcement.
