DODGE CITY, Ala. – The Dodge City Town Council on Thursday night declared a vacancy for the mayor’s seat for the second time this year. Mayor Todd Anthony, the third mayor since the town was incorporated in 1993, passed away Sept. 13, 2022. Anthony was appointed mayor after the town’s second mayor, Tawana Canada, passed away in January 2022. Canada was appointed mayor after Mayor Perry Ray died in 2009. Current Mayor Pro Tem Jason Burney requested a moment of silence during the meeting to honor his predecessors and their contributions to Dodge City.

The council set a closed work session for Oct. 24 to discuss the appointment of a new mayor.

Town Deputy David Pitts gave his report about some recent issues. “If anybody has been down (County Road) 490 lately, you’re very aware that Dodge City is growing, and with that growth comes problems,” he said. “My-Way trucking people that are doing all the construction down here, so far have counted 200 gallons of diesel being removed from their equipment on the job site.” Pitts said that cameras have been installed around the site.

The council approved its AEMA Division F Hazard Mitigation Plan resolution, which aims to reduce long-term risk to property during a natural disaster.

On Sunday, Oct. 23, the Town will host its first trunk or treat in front of Dodge City Town Hall from 6-8 p.m.

Perry Ray Park will be closed the evening of the 23rd in order for the Town to prepare for the annual Christmas in the Park celebration and begin park road repairs.

The Dodge City Town Council meets the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
