CULLMAN, Ala. – The City of Cullman Planning Commission approved the site plan for a proposed Whataburger on Cherokee Avenue Southwest and Swafford Road Southwest, with few contingencies. The new location will provide seating for 76 customers. The burger chain, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, opened in 1950, has almost 900 locations across the country and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Currently, the Decatur location is the closest to Cullman residents.
Public hearings and subdivisions were heard on two properties. The first, a short-form subdivision, was held for a property on Talley Ho Street Southwest. The second, a preliminary subdivision, was heard for Kilpatrick Landing Phase II. The project will add four lots near the entrance of the subdivision. No opposition was heard about either project, and both were approved.
A proposed site plan for Tidal Wave Car Wash to be located on Main Avenue Northwest between Katherine Street Northwest and Bruner Street Northwest was submitted. The City arborist noted that the plan included landscaping including Chinese privet hedge, an invasive species in the area. The arborist recommended the use of boxwoods or similar shrubbery. Other concerns were noted by department heads including water drainage onto the right of way. After a representative from Atlas Engineering assured the commission that the water recirculation system will meet its standards, the site plan was approved with seven contingencies.
A new Pizza Hut location on Brantley Avenue Northwest has its site plan approved with contingencies. The last site plan, for a new convenience store on U.S. Highway 278 West and Ward Avenue Southwest, was also approved with contingencies.
An annexation request for two parcels off Fairway Drive Northwest, north of Alabama Highway 157 and west of Interstate 65 was approved.
The commission approved its 2023 calendar for deadlines and meeting dates.
Lastly, the building department was tasked with reviewing updated state codes and providing recommendations.
