CULLMAN, Ala. – Sixteen teams of competitive senior citizens played their way through the brackets of the inaugural Senior Cornhole Baseball Tournament at Cullman First Church of the Nazarene Thursday, Sept. 23, with the Lakers team from the Cullman Senior Center coming out on top. Hanceville Senior Center players were runners-up.
The game is played similarly to typical cornhole with a few exceptions. Each hole on the board denotes different bases or foul balls. Three chairs are set up at each base and the batter walks to the appropriate base with each hit. The ingenious modifications promote senior wellness with functional mobility, functional transfers and bonding with team members and opponents.
Cullman County Commission Chairman Jeff Clemons beamed as he looked over the gymnasium full of rambunctious elders.
“This is a wonderful day. All of our seniors are having such a good time and that’s what it’s all about. Our seniors are our greatest asset, and they are priceless to us. (Cullman County Commission on Aging Director) Stephanie (Lawson) has done such tremendous work since she’s been with us, and we truly appreciate all that she does along with her staff for our seniors in Cullman County.”
Commissioners Kerry Watson and Garry Marchman engaged with the players while Bradley Williams of Cullman County Economic Development watched from the stage with a friend from the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.
The day after the tournament saw the players regaling each other with stories of the day and preparing to take home the win next year.
