ADDISON, Ala. – Saige Hall, almost 14 months old, of Addison, has stage 3 kidney cancer. She recently had her fifth chemotherapy treatment at Children’s of Alabama, and her mom, Sadie Hall, said that if the tumor in her daughter’s abdomen has shrunk enough, a spot is already reserved for her to have surgery on Sept. 29.

In August, Saige Hall had been sick with a fever and had no appetite. Her parents, Sadie and Reggie Hall, took her to the doctor to get her checked out. She was underweight and had lost 1 pound and 4 ounces since June, even after increased formula intake. Saige Hall was admitted to Children’s of Alabama on Aug. 15. After a chest and abdomen X-ray, a tumor was found during an ultrasound.

The tumor, a Wilms’ tumor, took up most of the space in her abdomen. Fortunately, 9 out of 10 children diagnosed with Wilms’ are cured.

Sadie Hall said she was shocked by the support given to her family by the community of Addison.

“I lived here for 18 years. Left for college, jobs, life and finally was able to come back 10 years later. I wanted to come back here so my children could be near my family that I love so much. So they could be a part of the community that I grew up in and that played a part in making me who I am. Never would I have imagined that I would rely so heavily on this community to help me and my family through such a nightmare. But, when Saige was diagnosed, they were there. People I haven’t spoke to in years reached out asking ways they could help or what they could do. From mowing our yard, cleaning our home, feeding our dog, hanging up bows and ribbons, paying bills, donations, organizing fundraisers, and the list goes on and on,” Sadie Hall said in a Facebook post.

Last Friday night, at Addison High School’s homecoming game, the Homecoming Court was announced, and Saige Hall was honored as Addison’s first-ever Homecoming Princess.

The community of Haleyville, where Sadie Hall has worked as a teacher for four years, also reached out to the family with its support. Within a week, she said, her coworkers had donated enough days for her to take the entire year off work to spend with her baby.

An account has been set up at each BankFirst location named “SadieStrong” for donations to help the family with medical expenses.

“We have been just overwhelmed with the amount of love and support that has been shown to our family from both the Addison and Haleyville communities. People immediately went to war for us in so many ways and we will never be able to repay or be able to properly say thank-you enough to everyone who has helped us,” said Sadie Hall.
