VINEMONT, Ala. – The Vinemont Town Council on Tuesday voted to surplus old appliances in the Community Center and give them to the Cullman County Child Development Center (CCCDC) for its Life Skills Center.
Teachers Stacey Ziegenbein and Summer Walker spoke to the council about the purpose of the center.
“We actually teach older students, all of which have special needs, cognitive disabilities, and we’re required to teach them life skills and work skills,” Ziegenbein said.
Ziegenbein and Walker have two classroom areas available and will be using one as a mock apartment in which students can learn life skills like cooking and cleaning in a functional setting.
The upcoming community barbecue cook-off event, organized by Richard Neese to support new business The Butcher Meat Co. is scheduled for Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. Parking will be at the Community Center and Vinemont Christian Church. Attendants can walk along Roberson Street, or golf carts will be available for transport to the event. A handicap drop-off will be next to Beyond Dental on Patton Drive.
Neese, owner of Tenax Enterprises, said, “We want it to be a cook-off, but we also want it to have a backyard feel, so we’re buying 18 picnic tables. We want to donate 16 of those to the town, and once we’re finished with the festival, then put them around the park so people can sit there with their family.”
The council also approved:
- The town budget for the 2022-2023 FY with $678,313.13 in total projected revenue, $673,815.34 in expected expenditures and a $571,711.91 current account balance
- A resolution for a one-time pay supplement for all Town employees in the amount of $1,200. There are five Town employees including the town clerk, public works director and three maintenance workers.
- The Alabama Municipal Insurance Corporation Bill for $20,820.00 divided into three payments in September, October and November. The bill insures all of the buildings owned by the municipality.
- The purchase of new appliances, replacement of the countertops and painting cabinets in the Community Center using $5,000 in ARPA funds
- The purchase of items for an outdoor volleyball court using $4,500 in ARPA funds
- The placement of VFW flags and holders along U.S. Highway 31 for $1,000.
- The proclamation of Suicide Awareness Month for the month of September
- A motion made by Councilwoman Sonya Copeland to allocate $2,400 of ARPA funds to supply the town’s free food pantry. The pantry is located next to the Vinemont-Providence Fire Department.
The Vinemont Town Council meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m., with work sessions at 5.
