CULLMAN – The United Way of Cullman County (UWCC) this week announced that nonprofit (501(c)(3)) allocation applications will be available for the 2017-2018 (April-March) year on or after Friday, July 15. Applications are due by noon on Aug. 25.

Qualified nonprofits must describe in their applications the need for funding, amount requested, how the funding will be used and how many the funding will serve. Copies of the following are required as well:  Proof of nonprofit status, EIN, Federal 990 and auditor report.

According to the UWCC’s allocation process, after the period for applications is over, “Allocation hearings (interviews) are set. A group of our board of directors make up the committee, meeting with every applicant. The results are shared with the full board. After much discussion, decisions are made as to WHO and HOW MUCH each applicant will be funded (allocated), which is based on our revenue.”

Agencies who receive funding are notified in writing and given an agreement with the terms and conditions of the partnership to be signed and returned to UWCC.

Partnership requirements include:

  • Directors must attend quarterly meetings.
  • Partners must submit quarterly financial reports, validating the use of funds and how many were served.
  • Partners must use the United Way of Cullman County logo on all printed material.
  • Partners must inform the UWCC should there be any changes in their nonprofit status and/or their mission for our financial partnership.

UWCC Executive Direct Sammie Danford, when asked how much funding each partner agency receives, said, “Each agency asks for a different amount, based on services they provide and other sources of revenue.  It will vary from as little as $1,500 to $66,000.

“Allocations applications are available annually,” continued Danford. “Even our current agencies have to submit a new application each year.  For instance, last year we had 17 applicants; however, only 15 were approved.”

2016-2017 UWCC agencies are:

  • 4-H Clubs of Cullman County
  • American Red Cross
  • Commission on Aging
  • Cullman Caring for Kids
  • Cullman County Center for the Developmentally Disabled
  • Daystar House
  • Easter Seals
  • Foster Grandparents & Senior Companions
  • Girl Scouts
  • Good Samaritan Health Clinic
  • HOPE Horses
  • Hospice of Cullman County
  • Pilot Light House
  • Victim Services
  • Youth Advocate Program

“Once an application has been received, each applicant goes through the interview process with a group of our board members.  This is a tough interview,” said Danford. “There are so many needs in our community; so much more needs to be done. It’s sad when we need more funds to work with.  I want to commend the UWCC Board of Directors with the decisions that have to be made.  We all just have to work harder to share our purpose and the value we have to the community on behalf of our agencies and how important it is.  Before the day is out it could be me, you, family or neighbors that needs one of our agencies and their services.”

Local nonprofits interested in applying for funding assistance through UWCC should call 256-739-2948 or contact Sammie Danford, sdanford@uwaycc.org, for information on applications, which will be available on/after July 15. Applications are due by noon on Aug. 25. The UWCC office is located at 304 First Ave. NE in Cullman.
