WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Town Council on Monday approved the allocation of up to $85,000 for the installation of LED lights at ball fields one, two and four. LED Capital installed lights at field three as a preview. The lights can be powered on and off with the flip of a switch unlike the current lights, which need time to power up.

LED Capital’s Muntingh Hamman said the lights are guaranteed to only lose 3% of their brightness to depreciation over 10 years. Shipping will take 30-45 days. Once the lights are delivered, installation will take a week to 10 days.

The council accepted a bid for the repair of a longtime issue – the West Point Ballpark retaining wall – from Burks Brothers Pools & Spas, which bid $78,000. Burks Brothers specializes in pools in addition to concrete work. Mayor Gerald Schafer said the council discussed that Burks Brothers is detailed and attentive, which contributed to the decision to accept the company’s bid.

“They’ve been in business a long time. There has to be some kind of credibility there because they are still going,” said Councilman Timmy Smith.

“He (Chad Burks) is from West Point, so he does care,” added Councilwoman Ashlee Phillips.

New playground equipment for the town park will be delivered Sept. 1.

The council voted to annex the site of the old Crooked Creek Civil War Museum into town limits. Fred’s LLC, named after the late Fred Wise, who created and tended to the museum for more than 25 years, will occupy the site. It will remain a museum displaying local history.

The council approved the Town’s transportation plan for the new fiscal year, required by the Rebuild Alabama Act of 2019. The plan includes the paving of County Roads 1246 and 1218.

West Point’s last movie night of the summer will be held Saturday, Aug. 20 at West Point Ball Park located 3990 County Road 1141. Guests can enjoy the movie “Jumanji” free of charge. The movie starts at 8:15p.m.

On Sept. 2, members of the West Point Senior Center will be taking their first trip to the Cook Museum of Natural Science in Decatur. There is room for 14 seniors to attend. Seniors can sign up at West Point Town Hall Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., or by calling 256-734-0006.

The West Point Town Council meets on the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
