Hubbard was convicted on 12 of 23 felony ethics charges on June 10 after being indicted in October 2014. Only one conviction was needed to automatically remove Hubbard from office.

Hubbard’s charges involved wrongly soliciting investments and consulting contracts.

He faced a maximum penalty of two to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $30,000 for each count.

Judge Jacob Walker set Hubbard's bond at $160,000 ($20,000 each on the first five counts, $10,000 on the second five counts, and $5,000 on the last two counts).

Hubbard was taken into custody by Lee County Sheriff’s deputies and released on bond around 11 p.m. on the same day he was convicted.

Hubbard's trial lasted three weeks and included testimony from dozens of witnesses, including Gov. Robert Bentley and former Gov. Bob Riley.

Hubbard maintains his innocence and his attorneys say they will appeal the verdict, although they haven’t said on what grounds.

Rep. Victor Gaston of Mobile County, the current house speaker pro tempore, has assumed the responsibilities of house speaker, though his title will not change.

Gaston will hold the speaker's duties until the start of the next legislative session (or special session) when an election will be held.
