WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Town Council on Monday evening had a first reading of an ordinance to annex the Fred’s LLC property into town limits. Fred’s, which has not yet opened, will occupy the site of the old Crooked Creek Museum named after the late Fred Wise who created and tended to the Civil War Museum for more than 25 years. The property will remain a museum displaying local history.
The council will vote on the annexation at its next meeting. The council hopes to annex even more properties into the town limits.
Mayor Gerald Schafer said, “We’d love to get more people in. People think their taxes are going to go up. Their taxes are not going to go up. We’ll get a percentage of what’s already being paid by our population, which we use to keep up the park and the roads.”
One of the benefits of annexation is free Air Evac medical flights for town residents; individuals who reside within town limits will be automatically covered for emergency pickups. Owners whose properties adjoin West Point town limits who are interesting in learning more about the benefits of annexation or looking to start paperwork on annexation are asked to call West Point Town Hall at 256-734-0006.

West Point’s Family Movie Night at the park Saturday, July 23 will feature “Zootopia.” Kids get in free, and adult admission is $5. Concessions open at 7 p.m., and the movie starts at 8:15. The park is located at 3990 County Road 1141.
On July 27, Cullman County Sheriff Matt Gentry and his office will be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs for the seniors at the West Point Senior Center. Any seniors 60 or older are invited to join for lunch and fellowship.
Park Director Mike Wray reported that 106 kids will be playing fall baseball on 11 teams this year.
He said the cost of hats and jerseys is covered. Parents are responsible for additional uniform costs. He said several parents reported having trouble finding some pieces of the uniform for the fall, including socks, pants and maroon belt.
Said Wray, “I talked to parents about for in the spring – and they actually like the idea – if we just did full uniforms for the kids: pants, socks, everything. They don’t mind a bump in price if they don’t have to go out and try to hunt all that stuff down.”
The council will decide at its next meeting whether to approve the purchase of full uniforms for the spring ball teams.
