CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Area Technology Academy (CATA) student and Holly Pond sophomore Kursten Putman is the first ever female student to pass the Siemens Solid Edge Association Level Certification Exam offered in the CATA engineering technology program. Solid Edge is an industry recognized exam that tests the skills and knowledge of students who use Solid Edge Software. Solid Edge provides a complete portfolio of product development tools for mechanical and electrical design, simulation, manufacturing, technical publications, data management and more.

The Associate Level Certification exam tests basic knowledge of the Solid Edge user interface, sketching tools and techniques, part modeling, assembly and drawing creation. A basic understanding of each environment and respective commands and features is needed to pass the exam.

Engineering instructor Mike Gay said, “She is one out of only about half a dozen that has qualified to take the exam and she is the only one that has taken the exam and passed it.” Students qualify for the exam by maintaining a B average in the exercises leading up to the exam.

Over a 10-year period, Gay estimated that 35 students at CATA have received their Solid Edge certification in the program. He has had some students with this certification get a job straight out of high school, “but it also is a part of an engineering degree, so this will be something that she can do in lieu of a couple classes that she would take in an engineering school and its also something she can put on her resume.”

Not only does Putman receive recognition for being the first female student at CATA to pass the exam, but she has also earned the right to use the official Solid Edge certified professional badge in marketing her Solid Edge skills.
