HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Hanceville City Council held their meeting on Monday with all council members present.

The council began by honoring the Hanceville High School Math Team who brought home the designation of the 2022 Division III State Champions. The school’s Geometry and Algebra II teams both finished in first place in their division. Individual winners for the Geometry team were Logan Lisle in 1st place and Brady Cleek in 3rd place. Placing for the Algebra II team was Jessica Marshall in 7th place. Rounding out the team were Luke Brown, Ivan Conway, Dalton Pirkle and AJ Stephens. School sponsors were Katie Brewer, Phamie Brown and Dana Lisle.

“We’re so proud of you guys. The council and I are so proud of our students and so proud of our teachers and our coaches. I’ll put our folks up against anybody. Hanceville is proud of you. I’m so glad y’all are state champs,” shared Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail as he presented the proclamations to the winners.

In new business, the council approved the paying of the bills including the Workers Compensation final bill of 2021 in the amount of $26,719. Twenty desks, which the city had in storage from the school, were deemed surplus. Council agreed to the purchase of a Kawasaki Gator for $4000 to be used for trash pickup at the city’s parks. The purchase will be deducted from the approved $14,000 authorized for the purchase of a line striper with the remaining $10,000 to go toward the striper.

Afterward, Police Chief Bob Long provided a brief update on the city jail construction with the block work expected to be completed this week.

Following the successful bluegrass performance at the civic center on Saturday night, Hanceville’s next event will be the Grilled Cheese Festival and opening of the city’s swimming pool on May 28. June 10-11 will see the Parade of the Bulls followed by dinner and the Hanceville Bull Bash.

The kiddie pool will be open this year at C.W. Park for the first time in several years, giving small children their own summer fun while their older counterparts enjoy the big pool.

The next work session will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 5:00 p.m. with the regular council meeting to follow at 5:30 p.m. at Hanceville City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
