BERLIN, Ala. – The Berlin Town Council on Monday evening took an early look at a proposed new subdivision and continued work on its farmers’ market, while passing resolutions to seek grant funding for infrastructure improvements.
The council looked at plans for a four-house subdivision on County Road 1615 and heard from developer Richard Neese, representing property owner Silvia Nino. No action was taken on this preliminary presentation, and the council scheduled a public hearing to take place at next month’s council meeting, to be held at the Berlin Community Center. According to Mayor Patrick Bates, notices will be posted around the town, and adjoining landowners will receive notices in the mail.
The council approved a contract bid of $90 every four weeks with A Plus Portable Restrooms for a “porta-potty” to be placed at the Berlin Farmers’ Market, and also voted to apply for a grant to fund the construction of a playground near the market. The council will talk about plans for the playground at a later date and will seek bids for equipment and construction.
The farmers’ market is scheduled to open with a community-wide event on May 21, 2022. The North Alabama Regional Council of Governments will set up booths for local businesses to advertise or sell goods, and the Farmers Market Coalition will be on hand with its children’s educational Power of Produce program. Town Clerk Keirstyn Montgomery announced that the owner of the Rock 278 Grocery has offered to supply free pizza and drinks for the event.
Mayor Bates talked about needed drainage improvements near the Highway 278/County Road 747 intersection at Berlin Hardware. According to Bates, the Cullman County Industrial Development Board has offered $5,000 if the town can get a grant from the Cullman County Community Development Commission. The council voted to apply for the CCCDC grant.
The council will consider and vote on a business license ordinance at its next meeting.
The Berlin Town Council meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday of each month. The next meeting will move from Town Hall to the Berlin Community Center, to accommodate a public hearing. The public is invited to attend.
