Cullman, Ala. – Baseball season is now in full swing across the City and County school systems, as well as a very special one for disabled kids. On Monday night, the Youth Miracle League got underway at the Field of Miracles. The Phillies took on the Diamondbacks, while the Mets faced off against the Mariners.
Each player from all four teams had big smiles on their faces as they felt the joy of not only hitting a home run, but simply having fun. There were a lot of comedic moments on the field and that had the crowd, as well as the parents, laughing. Each game ended in a tie, but that didn’t seem to matter to anyone. All of the huge smiles spoke for themselves.
Kelly Pulliam, who oversees the program, is very blessed to start a league like this for disabled kids. She also works with the Therapeutic Recreation, which is the Earth Special Needs Group.
“It started about 15 years ago with the Miracle League, so it’s been around for a while.” Pulliam said. “Then they built the Field of Miracles with the adaptive field, so they started then when they built this field. The best part about starting this league is so that people with all abilities can play ball. I also love the smiles on their face, how excited they get when they hit the ball and make a home run. My favorite part about working with Therapeutic Recreation is getting to meet and getting to know all of the families.”
Pulliam is always looking to see some more people join the youth Miracle League, disability or not, and lets them know how they can become a part of the next season.
