CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Area Technology Academy Cosmetology student Ally Banks won 1st place at the North District SkillsUSA job skills competition held Friday, March 11. Alabama SkillsUSA, in partnership with Governor Kay Ivey, is working to fill the goal of placing 500,000 new technically skilled Alabamians in the workforce by 2025. SkillsUSA offers Competitive Events programs in which members can compete to demonstrate workforce skills at the district level and can advance to the state level.
At the North District competition, 18 different technical and leadership contests were held. Banks competed in Job Skills Demonstration A, meant to evaluate each contestant’s ability to demonstrate and explain an entry-level technical skill used in the occupational area for which they are training.
Banks competed against 12 other contestants showing skills from various programs including building construction and automotive services. Banks demonstrated from her cosmetology training, the correct way to apply tape-in extensions. She’s now heading to the State Leadership and Skills Conference.
Banks commented, “I am thrilled to be the recipient of the SkillsUSA award, I appreciate all the support and help from the CATA teachers and administrators, especially Mrs. Flanigan. I feel like these skills will be important to my future. I am thankful for this opportunity. I can’t wait to compete at the next level. I am blessed to have the opportunity to go to SkillsUSA—it was fun meeting new people. Thank you to my school and CATA for giving me this opportunity. Now it’s time to prepare to go to state. I will never forget the excitement of winning. My future plans are to continue the program at CATA until 2023 and then attend the Cosmetology program at Wallace to complete the program.”
