CULLMAN, Ala. – This tax season, the Tribune spoke with local certified public accountants, enrolled agents and tax preparers on why it is best to pay them a visit to help with tax returns. Seeing a tax preparer may cost a little more than doing your own taxes online, but it is always a good idea to have someone to back you up if you are audited, to inform you about tax credits, and to give advice about withholdings to prevent owing a substantial amount at the end of the year.
Enrolled Agent Carol West of Dunn Right Taxes explains the benefits of using a tax preparer, “When you have the opportunity to sit face-to-face, the tax preparer can ask you questions, they can go more in depth, they can, when you talk about your situation, pull things from your conversation to use to help you with receiving a better refund.”
When doing taxes on an online site like TurboTax or H&R Block online, individuals may not understand why they are being asked specific information. A tax preparer can explain the process.
The IRS encourages everyone to have their taxes done as soon as possible; however, West says, “That doesn’t mean people need to jump ahead and file without the necessary forms because we end up doing a lot of amended returns for people that file without their mortgage interest statement or without stating that they had a stock sale in the current year.” As soon as individuals have all necessary documents is the best time to do their taxes.
West recommends filing taxes online or having your preparer file them online. People who file paper returns will not see refunds in a timely manner as the IRS is currently thousands of returns behind.
