Cullman Elk’s Lodge hosts annual Flag Day Ceremony on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. at the Elk’s Lodge, 1525 Brantley Ave NW, Cullman, Alabama 35055. It is a colorful and patriotic ritual that is both fun and educational for all of the family, including kids and grandkids. We talk about the history of our flag, display different ones from several periods in American History, have patriotic music and meet some of our local military veterans who have fought for our flag. You don't want to miss this outstanding living history event.
This year our veterans will include three from World War II, three double Purple Heart recipients from the Vietnam War, a combat medic with tours in Iraq, a veteran who served a combat tour in Bosnia, two in Iraq and four in Afghanistan and a female veteran who recently returned from Afghanistan. Our guest speaker piloted 40 bomber combat missions against the Luftwaffe in WWII, flew against the Japanese in the Pacific, flew for the Air Force during Korea and flew combat missions in Vietnam. He still plays golf three days a week at Terri Pines, is firm of voice and foot and recently celebrated his 96th birthday.
Free Meals at West Elementary School
The Cullman City Schools Child Nutrition Program is hosting a free meal program this summer. The Summer Feeding Program will run from June 1 through July 29 at West Elementary School. No meals will be served on July 4. Breakfast will be served from 9-10:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. each day. Meals are free to all children under the age of 18, regardless of school attended or income status. Adult meals will be available for a charge. The program is looking for volunteers. This would be a great opportunity for teenagers who need community service hours. WSCC Baseball 2016 Summer Camp
Wallace State’s baseball team will host its 2016 Summer Camp at James C. Bailey Stadium on June 6-9 for those ages 5 to 10 years old and June 20-23 for those ages 11-18. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day and registration fee is $100. Participants will receive instruction from Wallace State coach Randy Putman, a NJCAA Hall of Fame coach, assistant coaches Chad Shannon and Luke Satterfield and a host of Wallace State players. Summer Garden Camp
The North Alabama Agriplex still has space available in its hands-on, educational summer programs. The Summer Garden Camp meets four times and has classes for kids ages 3-5 (with an adult) and ages 6 to 10 drop-off. Garden Camp runs from 9-11 on June 8 and 22, July 6 and 20. Camp costs $35 and each camper will receive a t-shirt and take home projects.
Project Closet
At Longview Church of God, on the second Wednesday of each month from noon – 6 p.m., the public is welcome to come and shop for clothes at no charge. Donations of clothing are accepted, and shoppers can swap donations for any clothing in the closet. Call 256-734-2566 for more information.
