PREP BASKETBALL: Lady Raiders down Fairview 37-32, Aggies topple Good Hope 64-59

FAIRVIEW, Ala. – The Good Hope Raiders and Lady Raiders traveled to Fairview for a pair of varsity matchups Tuesday night but only one squad was able to return home with a win. The Lady Raiders and Lady Aggies were tied going into the final frame before Good Hope pulled away to earn a 37-32 win and in the boys’ game, Fairview topped the Raiders 64-59 to earn a big county win on its home floor.

Good Hope 37 – Fairview 32 (varsity girls)

Jayla Gorham hit a layup to put Fairview on the scoreboard first, but Good Hope’s Bailey Tetro hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at two. Ivey Maddox hit a short jumper to give the Lady Raiders a 4-2 lead. Another Gorham basket down low and five straight points by Sadie Smith gave the Lady Aggies a 9-4 lead. Fairview added to their lead later in the first quarter as Emma Garcia drilled a three and Morgan Lindsay added a layup to make it 14-5. A free throw by Bailey Tetro trimmed the deficit to eight going into the second quarter.

The Lady Raiders started to cut into the deficit even more to start out the second period. Maddox found Charly Johnson for back-to-back baskets down low to make it a 14-10 game, then Johnson found Rudi Derrick down low for a layup to make it a two-point game with a little over five minutes to go in the first half. Garcia pushed Fairview’s lead back to four with a pair of free throws, but a Kyndall Seal three cut the deficit to just one at 16-15. Heather Tetro hit a pair of free throws to give Good Hope a 17-16 lead and later added a three to push their lead to 20-17. A Lindsay basket made it a 20-19 game going into the half.

Both defenses took over the third period as a combined 11 points were scored in the quarter. A Heather Tetro three gave the Lady Raiders a 23-19 lead with 5:48 remaining in the period. Fairview didn’t score until more than halfway through the third quarter as Lindsay hit a layup to make it a two-point game, then baskets by Garcia and Smith saw the Lady Aggies get the lead right back at 25-23 with a little over a minute left in the period. Bailey Tetro tied the game at 25 on a layup and that would be the score going into the final period.

Seal broke the tie a little more than a minute into the final period with a three to give the Lady Raiders a 28-25 lead. The Lady Aggies trimmed the deficit to just one on a Gorham layup as that made it a 32-31 game with 3:23 remaining in the contest, but a Bailey Tetro trey pushed Good Hope’s lead to 35-31 nine seconds later. A Lindsay free throw trimmed the Lady Aggie deficit to just three at 35-32 with a little over a minute to go in the game, but Maddox would seal the 37-32 win for Good Hope with a pair of free throws. 

Bailey Tetro led the way for Good Hope (16-3) with 11 points. Heather Tetro added eight points. Maddox and Seal each ended up with six points. Johnson added four points, and Derrick chipped in with two points. For Fairview (13-6), Smith finished with nine points. Lindsay and Garcia each added seven points. Gorham ended up with six points and Somer Harris finished with three points.

Fairview 64 – Good Hope 59 (varsity boys)

Tanner Malin got off to a fast start as he scored Good Hope’s first five points of the game to help give them an early 5-0 lead. Ethan Fraiser got a tip to go in for Fairview as that put them on the scoreboard, then a pair of Cylas Yarbrough free throws made it a 5-4 game. Back-to-back baskets down low by Malin and Tyler Cone pushed the Raider lead to 11-4. Yarbrough hit a layup to make it an 11-6 game, but later on in the quarter, a Charlie O’Neil trey helped Good Hope increase their lead to 16-8. Parker Martin hit a shot down to trim the Aggie deficit to seven at 17-10 going into the second period.

A K’mal Bell made basket made it 19-10 early in the second quarter, but Fairview started to cut into the deficit almost midway through the second period. Baskets down low by Austin Johnson and Martin cut the Good Hope lead to 21-16 with less than four minutes to go in the first half. A Yarbrough basket made it a 23-18 game, but Malin hit back-to-back layups to push the Raider lead to 27-18. Austin Johnson scored on back-to-back baskets down low as the Aggies found themselves down, 28-22, at the half.

Malin and Weston Hancock got baskets down low to give the Raiders a 32-22 lead to start out the second half. A Kobe Payne trey and a Yarbrough made basket made it a 32-27 game, then a Cade Arnold short jumper cut the Good Hope lead to 34-30 with less than four minutes to go in the third period. Later on in the quarter, Yarbrough hit a layup and then, Arnold knocked down another shot down low, which made it a 36-35 contest. Malin hit a driving layup to make it a three-point game, but Bryson Chamness knocked down a trey to tie the game up at 38. Later on in the third quarter, Chamness broke a 40-all tie with a free throw, then Johnson hit another layup to give the Aggies a 43-40 lead going into the final period.

Fairview added to their lead in the final quarter. Payne and Arnold each hit baskets down low to push the Aggie lead to 47-40, then a pair of Payne free throws made it a nine-point game. Good Hope, though, answered right back with a run of their own, as Malin hit a pair from the line, then a huge basket by Noah Barnette made it a 49-44 contest. Lindsey and Malin each split a pair at the line to make it a three-point game, then an enormous three-point play by Barnette tied the game up at 49 with less than five minutes to go in the game.

With the game tied at 51, the Aggies went on yet another run as Payne drilled a three, then converted on the three-point play to make it 57-51. Johnson then made it 59-51 on another easy basket down low, but a pair of free throws by Malin and Barnette cut the Raider deficit to just four at 59-55 with less than three minutes to go in the contest. With less than a minute left in the game, Martin hit a pair from the line to make it 61-55, then Johnson and Landon Tweedie each hit one from the line to push Fairview’s lead to 63-56. An O’Neil trey made it a four-point game, but it was too little, too late for Good Hope as the Aggies ended up defeating the Raiders, 64-59.

Payne and Johnson each led the way for Fairview (11-5) with 15 points. Yarbrough added 10 points, while Martin and Arnold each ended up with six points. For Good Hope (8-8), Malin finished with 24 points. Barnette added seven points, while Lindsey and O’Neil each ended up with six points. 

Fairview will travel to West Point on Friday night, while Good Hope will go back home to take on Hanceville on Friday night in a pair of huge region games for both teams.
