CULLMAN, Ala. ā€“ The Cullman Area Technology Academy held an open house for their freshly renovated health science department Tuesday afternoon. The students stood full of expectation at their stations ready to explain each process and lesson to attendees.

First-year student Hannah Veres shared with The Tribune on her experience in her first nine weeks of the program at CATA, saying, ā€œIt is actually just really amazing. In the first year, we focus a lot on medical terminology. I think I am most looking forward to learning to take vitals, and maybe phlebotomy. My teachers are great, too. I am really just excited to be here.ā€

Representative Jeff Clemons and Cullman Economic Developmentā€™s Bradley Williams were in attendance and offered their ear to many young students as they discussed their procedures and protocols they are learning throughout CATAā€™s health science program, with stations such as EKG, CPR, Surgical Room, Elderly Care, Phlebotomy, Vital Signs and Medicine Cart provided.

Cullman County Schools Superintendent Shane Barnette spoke with the visitors and shared his thoughts on the completion of the renovations at CATA, sharing, ā€œThis is probably the most state of the art health science classroom in any high school in Alabama right now.ā€

The health science department is prepared to instruct and guide the next generation of students into the health field with the reconstruction of its flooring, walls and lights. Students will have access to brand-new equipment and a model operating room to practice skills that they could use in the surgical field.ā€ÆThis allows Health Science Instructors Tracy Smith and Adriann Basch to teach their students about hospital practices within a classroom that feels, and operates, almost exactly like a hospital.

Basch shared, ā€œWe are excited, they are excited. I mean, Tracy and I, to have the opportunity to learn something like this in high school would be amazing. This is really preparing students. We are excited for them.ā€Ā Ā
