BERLIN, Ala. – The Berlin Volunteer Fire Department has come up with a novel idea to help some families in need this Christmas: a seven-foot tall, teddy bear from the F.A.O. Schwarz toy store in New York, valued at $1,000 and provided by an anonymous donor, will be raffled on Dec. 4, 2021. The proceeds will go to help selected families with children in Welti, Fairview and Holly Pond elementary schools.  All three schools have families who live in the Berlin fire district.

“Our goal this year is to sponsor about four families from Fairview, Holly Pond and Welti elementary schools with not only Christmas, but if the need be—based on each family’s situation—a holiday meal and/or groceries,” said Shelby Teichmiller, the Berlin VFD’s social media coordinator.

Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and are available at the Berlin VFD and Berlin Town Hall.

Get ready for breakfast!

Berlin VFD will also host a pancake breakfast at the Berlin Community Center on Dec. 4 from 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. before the raffle drawing. Plates will be available for a donation, and all proceeds will go to the same charitable project. Kids who come to breakfast can get their pictures taken with Santa.

The bear will be on display at the Berlin VFD’s annual trick-or-treat night on Saturday, Oct. 30th.

For more information or to make a donation to the cause, contact the fire department, call or text 256-531-8585 or 256-798-6751.
