CULLMAN, Ala. – This October, there are loads of activities for friends and family of all ages throughout Cullman. As most know, October ushers in the series of months that contain the most holidays for the year. From October 1st – January 1st, there are 33 recognized holidays.
Here in Cullman, in tradition with its German heritage, Oktoberfest is celebrated annually at the beginning of the month. This yearly festival brings together people from all across the community, and even members from surrounding communities travel to celebrate. This year’s event saw a sizable turnout.
As we enter the latter half of the month, the focus is beginning to shift towards Halloween and fall festivals as local churches, departments and businesses begin to organize events accordingly for Cullman residents. This year, the hardworking members of the Cullman Police Department will be bringing back their Trunk or Treat on October 27.
With police cars, fire trucks, games, a DJ, plenty of candy and more, the Cullman Police Department’s Trunk-or-Treat will be sponsored by Merchants Bank of Alabama.
Police Chief Kenny Culpepper recently told the Tribune that they truly look forward to giving back to the community with this event.
“We will have our police vehicles in the parking lot in between Depot Park and the police department,” Culpepper said. “Many of our officers and department staff will be dressed up and handing out candy. The Fire Department also participates, and the helicopter will land on site. The kids and those who attend will be able to see everything while they trunk or treat.”
Chief Culpepper continued, “We are so looking forward to this year’s Halloween event. It has been two years since the last one, so we hope to make it bigger and better than ever, on October 27 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.”
While the Trunk-or-Treat will be taking place on the 27, the 5th Annual Bernard Blues and BBQ is scheduled to begin on October 30. This highly anticipated BBQ will be a two-day event, through October 31.
Hosted on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey and Preparatory School, this festival features some of the most highly regarded artisans in the southeast. Crafts such as pottery, wreaths, door hangers, flowers, wood turned bowls, clothing, birdhouses, honey, jewelry, soap, brooms, metal art, glass art, freshly ground cornmeal, grits and more will be featured and for sale.
While guests shop, there will be live music featured alongside selections of pulled pork, ribs, hamburgers, brats and chicken wings. St. Bernard Festival Director Joyce Nix shared, “Nearly 100 artisans and craftspeople will gather in Cullman to celebrate a weekend of art, music and family fun. It is two days’ worth of blues and smoky goodness, with a long list of arts and crafts vendors’, games and activities for kids and adults. We have a nonstop string of entertainment from local and regional musicians, as well as all the pork one can put away.”
With such an incredible start to the season from support all throughout Cullman, locals are sure to find something to celebrate around every corner, big or small.
