BREMEN, Ala. — The Cold Springs Eagles were back home for a region game against Winston County Friday night but unfortunately for Eagles fans, it was all Yellow Jackets from the start as they handed the Eagles a 34-7 region loss.
On Cold Springs’ opening possession on defense, they had a hard time stopping the Yellow Jacket offense as Winston County picked up back-to-back first downs on the ground; their second first down put them at the 24-yard line, but consecutive bad snaps by the center had Winston County looking at a fourth-and-29 from the 43. They completed a 36-yard pass to keep the drive alive, but the Yellow Jackets coughed up the ball two plays later as Victor Laurentius fell on the loose ball for the Eagles at the two-yard line.
Cold Springs quickly went three-and-out on its opening series and Winston County found the end zone in just two plays as a 16-yard touchdown run gave them an 8-0 lead with 4:53 remaining in the opening period. The Eagles were forced to punt on its next possession and the Yellow Jackets scored on a two-yard run to give them a 14-0 lead with 11:17 remaining in the first half. Cold Springs converted a huge third down on its next series as Hank Harrison found Laurentius for a 17-yard gain, but they couldn’t get anything after that and were forced to punt once again.
The Eagles looked to keep them out of the end zone for the rest of the half, but Winston County had other plans as they converted a couple of fourth down plays and later scored on a six-yard touchdown pass to put the score at 22-0. A Seth Williams pass was intercepted to end the first half and Cold Springs went into the half down, 22-0.
The first three series for both teams saw three punts. After an Eagle punt, some huge plays by Winston County quickly had them at the 17-yard line and the Yellow Jackets made it 28-0 on a seven-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Winston County scored their final touchdown of the game on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Cold Springs found the end zone late in the fourth period on a five-yard run by Harrison, but it would be too little, too late for the Eagles as they ended up falling to the Yellow Jackets, 34-7.
Harrison finished with nine carries for 55 yards and a touchdown; he also added a sack. Seth Williams also had a sack in the game as well. Laurentius recovered a fumble for Cold Springs (0-8, 0-5). The Eagles will look to recover next week when they travel to take on Lamar County in its region finale.
