CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman City Council held its regularly scheduled meeting in Lucille N. Galin Auditorium Monday night and among the resolutions and ordinances on the agenda was a resolution to recognize October as Dyslexia Awareness Month. After an invocation and the pledge of allegiance, the Council got things started by approving the minutes from its last meeting.

During the reports of standing committees that followed, Cullman Police Chief Kenny Culpepper and Cullman Fire Chief Brian Bradberry took a few moments to acknowledge former Cullman EMA Director Phyllis Little and the help she provided both departments over her 26-year career in Cullman.

“All the city agencies and all the county agencies have been able to have a great working relationship and it’s not that way everywhere in the state,” Culpepper said. “So, we’re very appreciative of her and want to thank her.”

“Director Little has been so helpful over the years,” Bradberry said. “We’ve had such a great working relationship over the years and we’re going to miss her.”

During his report on public works, Council member Johnny Cook announced that in conjunction with National Recycling Day Nov. 15, the city will be having a hazardous waste drop-off day Saturday, Nov. 13. City residents will be able to drop off hazardous waste at the East parking lot of Heritage Park, behind Lowe’s, and drop off will last from 8 a.m. – noon, until capacity is reached.

Following reports from the council members, the Council moved on to new business, starting with a public hearing for an Ordinance. The Council approved Ordinance No. 2021-52 to rezone 101 Main Ave. from R-4 Residential District to CBD Central Business District.

The Council also approved a pair of special event requests, one from Nathaniel Hutchison of the Cullman Moose Lodge for their annual Saturday turkey shoots in November and December and another from Jake Smith for a Halloween Cruise-in and Trunk or Treat at Depot Park Oct. 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

To wrap things up, the Council then approved or held readings for a handful of new ordinances and resolutions.
