FAIRVIEW, Ala. – This year’s Cullman County Volleyball Tournament officially got underway at Fairview High School Monday night and the tournament opened up with six consecutive sweeps. After Holly Pond and West Point swept Vinemont and Hanceville to get things started, Good Hope downed Holly Pond in two sets and Fairview collected a 2-0 win over Cold Springs. The Lady Aggies finished their night with a sweep of West Point and Cold Springs did the same to Hanceville, eliminating the Lady Bulldogs from this year’s tournament.
West Point 2 – Hanceville 0 (Match 1)
The no. 2 seed, West Point, faced off against the no. 7 seed, Hanceville in a first round match-up as the Lady Warriors begin to chase their third straight county championship. In the first match of the night, West Point jumped out to a quick double-digit lead and the win was never in doubt as the Lady Warriors cruised to a 25-5 win in the opening set.
The second set was similar to the first one as West Point jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead The Lady Warriors quickly pushed their lead to 17-3. The Lady Warriors were up 22-6 at one point but Hanceville didn’t make it easy for West Point as five straight Lady Bulldog points cut the deficit to 22-11. However, the Lady Warriors quickly regrouped and a kill by Braelee Quinn gave West Point a 25-11 win in round one. West Point will face Vinemont tomorrow at 4 p.m.
Fairview 2 – Cold Springs 0 (Match 2)
The Lady Aggies jumped out to a big, early lead in their first set against Cold Springs and despite the Lady Eagles battling and getting some points on the board, Fairview was able to cruise to a 25-7 win in the opening set.
The Lady Aggies built a 7-2 lead early in the second set and stretched the lead to 15-2 as the set went on. Fairview held an 18-3 advantage at one point and pulled away to win the second set 25-5 and complete the sweep of the Lady Eagles. Fairview will advance to play Good Hope tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Holly Pond 2 – Vinemont 0 (Match 3)
The no. 4 seed Holly Pond took on the no. 5 seed Vinemont in a first-round matchup. The Lady Broncos defeated the Lady Eagles 2-1 in their only other match so far this season. Holly Pond jumped out to a quick lead in the first set, and they didn’t let Vinemont find their comfort zone as the Lady Broncos went on to take the first set 25-10.
In the second set, Holly Pond ran out to a quick 9-3 lead and stretched their lead to double digits late in the set, but the Lady Eagles went on a run that saw them cut the Lady Bronco lead to 24-17. However, Holly Pond was able to get the final point of the set to win it 25-17 and sweep the Lady Eagles. The Lady Broncos will face Cold Springs and Vinemont will play West Point tomorrow at 4 p.m.
Good Hope 2 – Holly Pond 0 (Match 4)
The top-seeded Good Hope Lady Raiders hit the floor in round two to take on Holly Pond and the Lady Raiders advanced after taking a pair of competitive sets over the Lady Broncos. The opening set went back and forth until Good Hope built a late, 20-15 lead and the Lady Raiders pulled away to take it 25-18 and get ahead 1-0 in the match.
Good Hope led the way 9-6 early in the second set and maintained a 16-11 advantage midway through the set. The Lady Raiders took an 18-13 lead and ended the set on a 7-2 run to take it 25-15 and complete the sweep of the Lady Broncos. Good Hope will advance to take on Fairview tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Fairview 2 – West Point 0 (Match 5)
West Point got off to a fast start in its second match of the night, taking a 10-6 lead over Fairview but the Lady Aggies responded and put together an 11-3 run to move in front 17-13. Fairview extended its lead to 22-15 and held on to take the first set 25-19.
The Lady Aggies were the ones to take an early lead in the second set. The Lady Warriors kept cut into the lead and kept things tight early, but Fairview was able to pull ahead 17-10 midway through the set and went on to win it 25-19 and sweep West Point. The Lady Aggies will stay in the winner’s bracket and advance to take on Good Hope tomorrow at 5 p.m.
Cold Springs 2 – Hanceville 0 (Match 6)
The Lady Eagles took a 7-2 lead over Hanceville early in the first set, but the Lady Bulldogs were able to respond and trim the lead to 15-12 midway through the set. Cold Springs moved ahead 20-14 later in the set and scored five straight points to secure a 25-14 win and a 1-0 start in the match.
The Lady Eagles built a 12-5 lead early in the second set and kept their momentum going to make it a 16-5 lead at one point. Hanceville managed to cut the lead to 17-10 midway through the set, but Cold Springs finished strong and won the second set 25-17 to complete the sweep over the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Eagles will advance to take on Holly Pond in an elimination game tomorrow at 4 p.m.
