BAILEYTON, Ala. – The Baileyton Town Council met Monday night and were joined by several members of the town’s senior center to discuss several issues, including building security and use of the town’s bus for senior excursions. Since returning to normal activities in July, the seniors have noticed items missing from the senior center.

Baileyton Senior Center President Linda Cullen told the council that new keys needed to be made for the bus. She said, “Somebody took the keys. Nobody knows and it’s been almost six months.” The council approved having new keys made for the bus. Besides the keys, Cullen reported that other items come up missing, including a karaoke machine. She said, “There are so many keys out.”

The council agreed to have the locks changed at the senior center and have a limited number of keys made. Mayor Calloway or another council member will take over the duties of unlocking and locking the building before and after the seniors meet. This solution seemed to satisfy all parties.

Senior Center treasurer Myra Martin also submitted a budget request of $2,500 for the coming year. In addition, she asked for $1,250 for cleaning expenses ($25 a week). The council will work on the FY2022 budget in the coming weeks.

The council gave several updates on topics discussed at previous meetings. Mayor Calloway explained that the town continues to make progress in bringing Sprout internet service to the park. Along with free Wi-Fi in the park, additional lighting will be added.

Work is beginning on updating and renovating the park’s concession stand. Additional lighting is also being added around the concession area and along the pathway to the restrooms. Councilmember Dewayne Sumner hopes grant money will be available to help with the expense of the lighting projects.

In new business, the council has decided to hold Baileyton Bargain Days once a month. The popular event will take place on the third Saturday of each month. The next opportunity to attend Bargain Days will be Saturday, Sept. 18. Proceeds from the event are used for improvements to the park, including the recent replacement and refurbishment of playground equipment.

The council also voted to hire Cooke’s Accounting to handle the town’s payroll.

The Baileyton Town Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. inside the new town hall. The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 4. The public is invited to attend.
