SEATTLE, WA. – Cell carriers have recently decided ‘out with the old, and in with the new’ for older 2G and 3G networks, and are beginning to opt for newer, faster networks such as 4G and 5G. While this does mean progress with newer devices, it also means that Amazon has begun spreading the news that older models of their Kindle will be losing connection by the end of 2021.
While the oldest models will lose connection entirely, with new items no longer able to be downloaded, access to previously downloaded information will still be available. These models are the Kindle, 1st and 2nd generation, and the Kindle DX, 2nd generation.
Older models like Kindle Keyboard 3rd generation, Kindle Touch 4th generation, Kindle Paperwhite 5th, 6th and 7th generation, Kindle Voyage 7th generation and Kindle Oasis 8th generation will lose their cellular connections but will still be capable of downloading books through Wi-Fi connection. To identify the model of previously owned Kindles, Amazon has an online E-Reader Identifier which can find specific generations.
For those affected with models that will lose connection entirely, upgrading could be the only option. Luckily, Amazon has a Trade-In Credit Program for old devices. For those with models only affected by the loss data capability, as long as the device is functioning for the purpose it was purchased and a Wi-Fi connection, continue to enjoy!
