CULLMAN – To celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Day, Cullman Mayor Max Townson issued a “Teacher Appreciation Week” proclamation to Cullman City Schools Superintendent Dr. Susan Patterson at Cullman City Hall Tuesday afternoon. National Teacher Appreciation Day, also known as National Teacher Day, is observed on the Tuesday of the first full week in May. It is part of Teacher Appreciation Week, which is the first full week in May each year. Also, as part of the celebration, Patterson presented awards to the 2016 Teachers of the Year.
“On behalf of the mayor and the City Council, we proudly give you this proclamation in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week and thank you so much,” said Townson to Patterson.
“The City of Cullman is always recognized for the fine jobs our teachers do and we are very proud of that. As a matter of fact, Dr. Folsom and I graduated from Cullman High School and received a great education. Our school system has always been the front in all aspects; academics as well as athletics. We are very proud of that.
“I say this and I will continue to say it for the rest of my life; education makes dreams come true and we appreciate our teachers for the efforts they make to ensure each child reaches their full potential when it comes to education. Without that, they are not able to be productive citizens in our community.”
Patterson presented the five 2015 – 2016 Teachers of the Year with special awards. Those teachers are:
- Kimberly Dial – Cullman City Schools Elementary Teacher of the Year
- Jackie Donaldson – Cullman City Schools Secondary Teacher of the Year
- Tomesha Montgomery – Cullman City Schools Primary School Teacher of the Year
- Natalie Tielking – Cullman City Schools Cullman Middle School Teacher of the Year
- Kristin Nunn – Cullman City Schools East Elementary School Teacher of the Year
“The faculty picks one Teacher of the Year from each school to represent their schools,” Patterson explained. “We have two divisions, an Elementary Division and a Secondary Division. The Primary School, East Elementary and West Elementary make up the Elementary Division and the Middle School and High School make up the Secondary Division. Once we select one teacher from each school, then we select an overall winner for each division.
“Once the teachers pick at their school, there’s a panel; I think there are four people that actually evaluate them and give them scores,” she continued. “The teachers are evaluated on their resumes, activities that they lead or participate in and if they do presentations and that sort of thing.”
Teachers play an important part in our children’s lives and Cullman has some of the best. Congratulations to the 2015 – 2016 Teachers of the Year! We at The Cullman Tribune would like to wish all of our teachers a very happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
