COLONY, Ala. – The Colony Town Council on Tuesday evening discussed plans for its upcoming Colony Day community celebration, scheduled for the Community Center Saturday on Aug. 7, with a rain date planned for Aug. 14. According to Councilwoman Jasmine Cole, the event will feature a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, volleyball tournament, spades tournament, dominoes tournament, cake walk, rib cook-off and inflatables and school supplies for children. Cole, who was not present at the meeting, sent a message saying that the Cullman Electric Coop will bring a new electric Ford Mustang and charging station.
Cole also reported that the talent show originally scheduled for July 31 will take place at Colony Day, starting at 4 p.m. Participants should register by 3:15 p.m. on the day of the event, at the table by the ballfield.
Event fees:
- Entry in the rib cook-off – $10, register by Aug. 6
- Family tents – $25
- Vendor spots – $25
- Food truck spots – $50

Help for roads
The council approved a resolution to seek a grant for assistance in repairing local roads. According to the resolution, funding will be used on four roads in the following order of priority:
- Byars Road
- Johnson Circle
- Wooley Road
- Fields Boulevard
Streets and Drainage Committee Chairperson Mary Parker said that she is working on replacing damaged or missing street signs, and that she will seek a warning light for the main intersection entering Colony from Highway 91.
Town historian named
The council approved a resolution to name Earline Johnson as Colony’s town historian. The resolution noted her previous research and writings on Colony history, as well as her lifelong residency in the town.
The council also approved resolutions to:
- Remove Stephanie Marshall and Fallon Hagler from the Library Committee
- Add Councilman and Finance Committee Chairman Michael Johnson as a check writer on the town’s bank accounts, and remove former Town Clerk Patricia Ponder
The Colony Town Council meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at Colony Town Hall. Work session begins at 5:40 p.m. and meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
