HANCEVILLE, Ala. – A new Little Free Public Library has opened in Hanceville, thanks to the Friends of the Public Library. These Little Free Public Libraries operate on an honor system and allow anyone access to free literature. The front of the box is labeled “Take a Book. Share a Book.” and lists the Little Free Library web address.

Those in attendance were Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail, Director of the Cullman County Public Library Sharon Townsend, Hanceville Head Librarian Shirley Burden, several members of The Friends of the Public Library and Library Board and many others.

“The accessibility of literature to people of all ages is incredibly important and the Little Free Public Library’s purpose is to provide that,” Director Townsend explained, “While there are several across Cullman County, when a Little Free Public Library is registered, it shows up on a map online at littlefreelibrary.org and can be visited by anyone.”

After the ribbon was cut and the Little Free Public Library was officially open, Mayor Nail shared a statement with all in attendance as things wrapped up. “I think sometimes, and we don’t mean to, but I think sometimes we forget about the library. Every department is so important. It is a spoke in this wheel. Every department.”

He further explained, “Well maybe the police are important? Yeah, they are. Well maybe the fire department is important? Yeah, they are. Why is the library important? If we can get that child’s attention early on when they are 6 or 7, and get them interested in reading books, I believe that they start developing ideas at a younger age about what they want to do with life. Everybody plays an important part. The libraries play an important part. Just as important as everybody else. – I appreciate our libraries so much.”
