CULLMAN, Ala. — The West Point Lady Warriors and the Cold Springs Lady Eagles took part in a pair of summer play-day games at Cullman. West Point rolled past Section 43-22 in its first game before dropping its second game to Pell City 37-36. As for Cold Springs, they defeated St. John Paul II 40-29 in the first game and ended up falling to Hatton 47-39 in its second game.
West Point 43 – Section 22 (Varsity Girls)
Ryleigh Jones knocked down a three less than a minute into the game to put West Point on the scoreboard first, then a Braelee Quinn basket made it a 5-2 score. After Section made it a one-point game, Summer Mendoza, Quinn, and Laklin Shadix each scored during the Lady Warriors’ 8-0 run and that pushed their lead to 13-4. Later on, a pair of free throws by Mendoza and a Quinn layup increased West Point’s lead to 19-6 at the half.
The Lady Warriors continued to pull away from Section to start out the second half as a Quinn three and back-to-back baskets by Liberty Shadix made it a 26-6 game early in the second half. A Jaylen Faulkner layup gave West Point a 32-12 lead, but the Lady Lions went on an 8-0 run to cut the Lady Warrior lead to 32-20 with 5:53 remaining in the game. The Lady Warriors finished the game out strong, going on an 11-2 run, as they ended up dominating Section, 43-22.
Quinn led the way for West Point with 15 points. Laklin Shadix and Mendoza each added six points. Liberty Shadix and Hallie Wheeler each ended up with four points. Jones added three points, while Kaylee and Jaylen Faulkner each chipped in with two points.
Pell City 37 – West Point 36 (Varsity Girls)
West Point took on Pell City in its second game of the day and it was a tough first half for both teams offensively. Wheeler nailed a three only 1:10 into the first half to put the Lady Warriors on the scoreboard first, then Jones later hit one from deep to make it a 6-2 game with 17:47 remaining in the half. Pell City scored five in a row to take a 7-6 lead, then both teams went through a long scoring drought of over seven minutes before a layup by the Lady Warriors gave them an 8-7 lead.
Liberty Shadix then added a shot down low to make it 10-7, but the Lady Panthers scored on back-to-back baskets down low to get the lead right back at 11-10. Quinn scored the final five points of the half for West Point as they went into the half up by a score of 15-11.
The Lady Warriors went on a huge run to start out the second half as a three by Quinn started a 13-0 run and she scored eight points during the run. Jones added a three and Laklin Shadix added a basket as well and West Point pushed their lead to 28-13 with 13:06 remaining in the game. West Point held a 30-15 lead almost two minutes later, but that’s when Pell City went on their run as they scored nine in a row to make it a 30-24 game. Mendoza stopped the bleeding with a layup to make it an eight-point game, but the Lady Panthers continued on their huge run as seven straight points made it a 32-31 contest with 2:15 remaining in contest.
Both teams traded free throws and Pell City held a 37-34 lead after they hit theirs with 15 seconds left. Quinn hit one from the line with 4.9 seconds remaining to make it a one-point game, but the Lady Warriors didn’t put up a shot on their final possession as they ended up falling to the Lady Panthers, 37-36.
Quinn led the way for West Point with 17 points. Jones added six points. Wheeler ended up with three points. Mendoza and Laklin and Liberty Shadix each added two points.
Cold Springs 40 – St. John Paul II 29 (Varsity Girls)
Cold Springs faced off against St. John Paul II in their first game of the day. Ciara Calvert nailed a three to give the Lady Eagles an 3-0 lead, but the Lady Falcons scored the next eight points as the Lady Eagles quickly found themselves down, 8-3. Ella Dickerson and Ella Bruer each nailed a three and Malaya Taylor hit a basket down low to give Cold Springs an 11-8 lead with 12:12 remaining in the first half. St. John Paul II quickly scored five in a row to get the lead right back at 13-11.
Starla Chenell drilled a three and Taylor added another basket down low to give the Lady Eagles a 16-13 lead and later on, a layup by Erin Bailey and another three by Bruer pushed Cold Springs’ lead to 24-17 at the half.
Dickerson added another three to start out the second half and later on, Bruer added another one from long distance to increase the Lady Eagle lead to 30-19; they each added a layup as well and that made the score, 34-19. The Lady Falcons trimmed the deficit to nine after a 6-0 run, but baskets by Dickerson, Taylor, and Bruer helped put an end to their run as the Lady Eagles ended up taking game one, 40-29.
Bruer finished with 16 points for Cold Springs. Dickerson added 10 points. Taylor ended up with six points. Calvert and Chenell each added three and Bailey chipped in with two.
Hatton 47 – Cold Springs 39 (Varsity Girls)
Cold Springs took on Hatton in their final game of the day. Early on, it was a three-point shooting contest for both teams as both teams nailed a pair from long range to tie the game at six. Baskets by Dickerson and Taylor gave the Lady Eagles a 10-6 lead, but the Lady Hornets went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-12 lead with 12:44 remaining in the first half. Both teams tied or swapped the lead for the rest of the half. After a Dickerson made basket tied the score at 23, a Hatton trey broke the tie and Cold Springs found themselves down, 26-23, at the half.
The Lady Hornets quickly pushed its lead up to eight to start out the second half, but a pair of baskets by Bruer and one by Chenell, made it a 31-29 game with 15:06 remaining in the contest. A Bruer trey made it a 33-32 game, but Hatton quickly made back-to-back baskets to make it a four-point contest. The Lady Eagles tied the game up at 37 on a huge three-point play by Dickerson, but the Lady Hornets converted on one of their own and added a three to make it a six-point contest. Taylor hit a layup to swivel the Cold Springs’ deficit to 43-39, but Hatton added a pair of free throws to put the final score at 47-39.
Bruer and Dickerson each finished with 12 points for Cold Springs. Taylor added eight points. Calvert ended up with five points and Chenell chipped in with two points.
