WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) will receive support from the town council with a $500 donation approved Monday evening. The FFA alumni is hosting a goat, lamb and cattle show this weekend at the Cullman Ag Center as a fundraiser for the FFA, and the town’s donation will go toward the show.
WPHS Agriscience teacher Ethan Lake is the school’s FFA sponsor and spoke to the town council. He said of this weekend’s show “We bring in students from all across the southeast. The show is open to kids from Alabama and surrounding states.”
The money raised by the FFA alumni assists a number of different FFA needs. Lake explained, “Our FFA alumni pays for our FFA membership every year which then allows the kids to participate in FFA events, competitions, as well as proficiency awards.” The FFA alumni also helps by sponsoring students’ trips to places like Montgomery, Auburn and Indianapolis for state and national conventions.
The town will soon have a new patriotic feature present for several holidays as the council approved the purchase of new flags that will be placed on County Roads 1141 and 1242 during Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day. The council approved $1600 towards the purchase of the flag sets.
In other business:
The council also approved donating $500 to the Cullman County Commission on Aging for the upcoming Senior Christmas Party.
The council approved creation of a new bank account for funds expected from the American Rescue Plan. The funds will remain separate and clerk Joann Jones will be attending a class at Calhoun Community College this Thursday where she anticipates learning how the money can be spent.
Thursday at 11 a.m., the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office will be at the West Point Senior Center for a “Welcome Back” cookout.
The West Point Council meets every third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at the town hall. The public is invited to attend.
