CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Caring for Kids recently began an outreach program using its new Mobile Food Bank to make its free groceries easier to access for families in remote parts of the county. Each Wednesday, the team visits one of four sites in West Point, Hanceville and the Simcoe and Crane Hill communities. Members report that turnout is lower than anticipated, but they expect that the numbers will increase as more people learn about the program.
CCK Director Javon Daniel told The Tribune, “The numbers are low so far. We anticipate them going up when the words get out more.”
Administrative assistant Tonja Grace has seen encouraging signs and shared, “The first turn out wasn’t as we expected; however, as word gets out, we have seen an increase in the numbers as we have so far traveled to Crane Hill, in which we received a blessing. Not only did we give out food, we had several drop-off food donations and monetary donations.”
CCK’s Mobile Food Bank visits sites on a regular schedule:
- First Wednesday – West Point Town Hall
- Second Wednesday – Simcoe Community Center
- Third Wednesday – Hanceville City Hall
- Fourth Wednesday – Crane Hill
Food is available for Cullman County families in need who meet CCK’s qualifications for assistance. If you have not previously received food from the agency, when you come, bring with you:
- Bring a photo ID
- Proof of income
- Proof of address
- Award letter, if you receive food stamps/EBT
Only one family per household may receive assistance, and families who receive food from the mobile unit cannot receive food from the Cullman office during the same time period.
The new outreach program coincides with shortages at the North Alabama Food Bank, so CCK needs local support more than ever, through food and monetary donations. CCK Assistant Director Nancy Bryant said, “This is so exciting to bring the food to the people. We want everyone to have food on their table. We want everyone to come out and get that extra help.”
The Cullman Caring for Kids Mobile Food Bank project was launched with the support of Publix and United Way of Cullman County.
