The city and county schools always do an amazing job at taking care of Cullman’s students and with summer just around the corner, they don’t plan to slow down. This summer, both the City and County Schools are implementing a Summer Feeding Program.
Here in the City, the program begins June 8 and continues through August 3, exempting the week of July 4. Meals will be provided for students under the age of 18 at no cost. There are plans in the works to implement the use of drive-thru pickups from both West Elementary and Cullman High School, which will be open from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. each day.
As for the County, every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., there will be weekly meal pickups for all students across the county. With so much ground to cover and so many mouths to feed, they have decided to host these pickups at Fairview, Vinemont and West Point High Schools. Their weekly pickups will be on the Wednesdays of the 16, 23 and 30.
Throughout summer break, children may go home to less fortunate situations than most, in which it may be harder for their parents to provide well-rounded meals. Thankfully, the Summer Feeding Program will be able to combat these circumstances and give every child a chance to go to bed with full stomachs.
With school disrupted, jobs being laid off and all routines renewed, drive-thru pickups have become a frequently used and largely helpful contribution to how our day-to-day lives have changed. There are always new improvements to be made, especially for the betterment of our community and for our children.
Kids always deserved the right to get to be kids. Childhood is so fleetingly short and the “grown up world” is never quite what you expect it to be. In some hard cases, children are left wondering where their next meal may come from. Summertime is for sweet tea, swimming and good memories.
