Veteran Memorial: Edward Morris Pike

Edward Morris Pike was born July 10, 1949, in Cullman County and lived in Hanceville. He enlisted in the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War. He began his tour in Vietnam July 29, 1967, with the rank Specialist Four.  

His occupation in the Army was Single Rotor Turbine Observation Utility Helicopter Repairman and he was attached to the 25th Infantry Division, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry, D Troop, also known as “Mackenzie’s Riders.”  

On Jan. 31, 1968, the first day of the Tet Offensive, the North Vietnamese attacked the Tan Son Nhut Air Base in South Vietnam’s Gia Dinh Province. Pike was killed during the attack from small-arms fire.  

Pike is now buried at Piedmont Memory Gardens in Calhoun County, Alabama and is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. His name is inscribed on Panel 36e, Line 30. He’s also a recipient of the Purple Heart.
