CULLMAN, Ala. – The Class of 2021 from Holly Pond High School took part in one of the school’s newest traditions Wednesday morning by participating in the Senior Walk. Dressed in their caps and gowns, the soon to be graduates visited Holly Pond Elementary School and Middle School and received cheers and applause from the young Broncos as they passed through.
HPHS principal Steve Miller said of the Senior Walk, “It was something else!” He added, “We had our awards day for our seniors today and this is kind of an honor for them. It was really good, and a lot of work went into it.”
Holly Pond Elementary principal Karen Sparks was unable to attend the Senior Walk but said, “I think this is a great opportunity for our younger students to see what they are working toward and set goals to reach those goals.” Miller agreed, “I think it’s big for those elementary and middle school kids to see those things, so we were excited during the COVID era to do that today.”
The Senior Walk began a couple of years ago, but was put on hold last year. This year, the 70 HPHS Seniors were happy to return to the tradition. “I think it’s natural for younger kids to look up to older students and I think it’s something they can look forward to, being a senior and being able to graduate. Our graduation rate is really good and it has been for the last three or four years, and I think this is a big part of that.”
Miller especially wanted to thank HPHS assistant principal Janet Turner and counselor Candice Grochowalski for their hard work in organizing Wednesday’s Senior Walk. He said, “They did a great job and a lot of work went into it from our faculty and staff.”
The Holly Pond High School graduation is scheduled for May 22 at 4 p.m. in Wallace State Community College’s Tom Drake Coliseum.
